Develop your regulatory, advocacy and litigation expertise in a supportive legal team
The Legal Team plays a pivotal role in supporting the Victorian Institute of Teaching (VIT) to deliver its regulatory responsibilities and uphold public confidence in the teaching profession. Providing specialist legal expertise across complex investigations, disciplinary proceedings, litigation and regulatory decision-making, the team works on matters that help protect the safety and wellbeing of children and young people while maintaining the integrity of Victoria's education sector.
About the role
Reporting to the Legal Manager within the Professional Conduct Branch, you will provide legal advice and support across VIT's regulatory functions.
As a Lawyer, you will work alongside experienced Senior Lawyers on diverse range of regulatory matters. In this role you will work on disciplinary proceedings, suitability assessments, policy matters and litigation, contributing to outcomes that directly impact the teaching profession and broader community.
Key Responsibilities:

Provide legal advice across VIT's regulatory functions, including disciplinary proceedings, prosecutions and regulatory decision-making.

Conduct and review suitability assessments for teacher registration applicants and provide advice on preliminary assessments and risk-related matters.

Represent VIT in disciplinary hearings, courts and tribunals, including preparing allegations, submissions, hearing books and witness materials.

Assist with litigation matters, Freedom of Information requests, subpoena management and other legal processes.

Prepare high-quality reports, briefs, correspondence and other legal documentation for internal and external stakeholders.

Contribute legal advice to policy development, legislative change projects and organisational initiatives.

Manage your own caseload while collaborating with colleagues to deliver timely and effective regulatory outcomes.
About you
You are a motivated legal practitioner who enjoys working in a purpose-driven environment and is looking to further develop your regulatory, litigation and advocacy skills. You are a strong communicator who can analyse complex issues, exercise sound judgement and build effective working relationships with a diverse range of stakeholders.

Admission as an Australian Legal Practitioner with a current Victorian Practising Certificate (or the ability to obtain one).

Experience providing legal advice on administrative law, criminal law, statutory interpretation or other regulatory matters.

Strong written and verbal communication skills with the ability to influence and support sound decision-making.
