About us
Biro Strategy is collaborating with regional businesses across Australia to bridge skill gaps and facilitate long-term employment opportunities. We have multiple roles available, each critical to the smooth functioning of growth sectors across regional NSW and VIC. Standard working terms and conditions are based on the industry sector standards, with competitive pay rates.
The opportunity
We are seeking a qualified Fitter (General) to become an integral part of the maintenance team at an established leather processing facility. Leather processing runs on heavy, water-and-chemical-intensive machinery that cannot afford to stop — a single fitter who can diagnose a fault, fabricate a part and get a drum or splitting line back into production saves hours of lost throughput. You'll work hands-on across the beamhouse, tanning, wet-finishing and dry-finishing areas, on equipment that runs hard in a wet, corrosive environment.
Key responsibilities — Maintenance Fitter
- Perform preventative, planned and breakdown maintenance across processing plant — tanning and dyeing drums, paddles and mixers, fleshing, splitting, shaving, sammying/setting-out and buffing machines, toggle and vacuum dryers, and hide-handling conveyors.
- Study drawings, specifications and technical manuals to determine the right material, method and sequence of repair.
- Fit, assemble and align fabricated metal parts and sub-assemblies; check accuracy, clearance and fit using precision measuring instruments.
- Maintain and repair hydraulic and pneumatic systems — cylinders, valves, actuators, pumps and pipework — and test for leaks and pressure integrity.
- Maintain pumps, motors, drives, bearings, gearboxes and conveyor systems running in wet and chemically aggressive conditions.
- Fabricate, modify and machine replacement parts as needed using lathes, presses and general workshop tooling.
- Conduct daily plant checks, start-ups and shut-downs, and attend breakdowns on shift to keep production moving.
- Carry out precision alignment of rotating equipment and contribute to reliability improvements and root-cause analysis.
- Apply strict safety procedures including LOTO, confined spaces, working at heights and JSA/SWMS risk assessments.
About you
- Certification and Experience: You hold an Australian-recognised trade qualification — Certificate III in Engineering (Mechanical Trade / Fitting & Machining) or equivalent, including on-the-job training, or recognised overseas credentials (TRA). Hands-on maintenance experience in leather processing, meat or agri-processing, FMCG, food manufacturing, timber, steel or similar heavy industry is ideal.
- Technical Skills: Confident diagnosing, troubleshooting and repairing mechanical faults; experienced with preventative maintenance, hydraulics and pneumatics, machining and fabrication, alignment, and reading drawings and schematics.
- Soft Skills: Excellent communication, time management and multitasking; you work well independently and as part of a small, collaborative team.
- Adaptability and Learning: A proactive learner who embraces new equipment and is always looking for ways to enhance efficiency, safety and reliability.
- Licenses and Certifications: Valid Australian driver's licence. Confined space, working-at-heights, EWP, forklift or welding tickets are a plus.
