We manage the ICT platforms and systems that support the department’s core operations. Our team ensures these platforms are secure, scalable and designed for long-term sustainability. We support innovation through DevOps practices and modern testing approaches, enabling faster and more reliable delivery of digital solutions. From Information Management to ERP Systems, and Web and Collaboration systems, we provide the digital foundation that helps staff work efficiently and deliver services that support the department.
As an Assistant Director, you will help shape the department’s digital direction by embedding information management as a core part of business operations. The Information Management Section provides advice, support and records services to departmental officers across Australia and overseas to manage business information assets. The section’s responsibilities include:
- developing and maintaining information governance frameworks, strategies and policies aligned to corporate objectives, APS Values and whole-of-government requirements
- planning, assessing and reporting on information holdings, systems and practices
- providing evidence-based advice to governance forums, senior leaders and external authorities
- developing and maintaining the department’s business classification and records authorities
- managing and supporting the department’s records and information management systems
- providing practical advice to improve digital information quality, integrity, discoverability, accessibility and usability
- delivering lifecycle management initiatives, including sentencing projects and transfers, and analysing business processes to identify inefficiencies and drive change
- working with business areas to embed improved information management practices into operational workflows
- championing information as a key departmental asset.

As an Assistant Director your duties will include:
- leading and supporting the team to maintain strong recordkeeping practices
- implementing strategies and procedures to meet National Archives of Australia and other compliance requirements
- building productive relationships with business system owners and information management stakeholders to deliver innovative, compliant solutions
- providing high-quality, strategic advice to the Director on matters affecting the team
- mentoring, guiding and influencing staff to achieve strong results in a positive work environment
- contributing to secure, reliable and sustainable information management services that support the department’s activities
- managing day-to-day work to meet section and branch objectives and targets.
Please note that this recruitment process will
initially be used to fill one ongoing vacancy. The merit pool established through this selection process, which is valid for a period of eighteen months from the date the vacancy was advertised in the Public Service Gazette, may also be used to fill future ongoing vacancies in the branch where the duties are of a similar nature.
Who we are looking for
Knowledge and experience
The ideal applicant will have:
- a working knowledge of the Archives Act 1983 and records authorities
- experience leading and managing teams
- an understanding of digital information management ecosystems
- experience administering and configuring Content Manager (or a similar EDRMS)
- an understanding of SharePoint and MS Teams administration and/or configuration
- experience administering and managing datasets as records.
