As a Provisional Fellow in Nephrology, you will be provided a structured 12-month subspecialty training opportunity within the Department of Nephrology at St George Hospital, a major tertiary referral centre within SESLHD.
The position is designed for candidates who have completed, or are working towards, FRACP Nephrology Fellowship and who wish to develop focused subspecialty expertise. Applicants working towards FRACP may accredit 6 months as advanced training in line with RACP requirements, following completion of the full 12-month fellowship.
The provisional fellow nominates a preferred subspecialty stream at application, and the program is structured accordingly under the supervision of the relevant subspecialty consultant. The fellowship combines a structured clinical service role with dedicated subspecialty experience, research, quality improvement, and education. Applicants wishing to commence a PhD concurrently may do so by prior arrangement with their nominated supervisor, subject to university requirements.
Kidney Supportive Care (KSC) integrates symptom management, advance care planning, conservative kidney management, and palliative care principles for patients with advanced kidney disease. The fellow will:
- Attend the weekly KSC outpatient clinic, providing holistic assessment and management of patients with advanced CKD, including those on kidney replacement therapy and those pursuing conservative management
- Conduct inpatient KSC consultations including goals-of-care discussions, symptom management, conservative pathway input, and end-of-life care across nephrology and other medical services, supervised by a KSC physician
- Collaborate with KSC nurse consultants, allied health, palliative care, and other inpatient and outpatient providers
- Contribute to development and refinement of KSC clinical protocols, referral pathways, and advance care planning documentation
- Participate in KSC-specific quality assurance activities including clinical audit and outcomes monitoring, or a undertake a formal research study relevant to KSC
- Provide education to medical staff, nursing, and allied health on KSC principles, conservative management, and end-of-life care in kidney disease
This stream is embedded within a combined nephrology and obstetrics service for risk-associated pregnancy, consistent with the model of obstetric medicine as defined by SOMANZ. The fellow functions as part of an integrated team alongside obstetric and nephrology consultants. The fellow will:
- Attend the weekly obstetric medicine clinic, providing specialist assessment and longitudinal management of women with risk-associated pregnancy across antepartum, postpartum, and preconception settings
- Respond to inpatient obstetric medicine consultation requests from the obstetrics service, providing specialist assessment and co-management of medically complex inpatients
- Participate in combined nephrology-obstetrics ward rounds and multidisciplinary case discussions
- Undertake a defined research or quality assurance project within obstetric medicine, which may include clinical audit, outcomes data collection, protocol development, or a formal research study relevant to the risk-associated pregnancy cohort
- Contribute to the education of obstetric and renal nursing staff, midwives, junior doctors, and trainees on obstetric medicine and the management of medical conditions in pregnancy
- Expand on their experience by attending relevant endocrine and GDM clinics as required
The clinical trials stream is suited to fellows with a strong research orientation who wish to develop expertise in the design, conduct, and governance of nephrology clinical trials. Candidates choosing this stream should be working towards a PhD by prior arrangement with a nominated supervisor. The fellow will:
- Assist with identification and recruitment for currently active clinical trials within the department
- Act as a sub-investigator on one or more approved nephrology clinical trials, including protocol adherence, data integrity, and adverse event monitoring and reporting
- Liaise with the research governance office, ethics committees, and sponsoring institutions regarding trial conduct and regulatory compliance
- Participate in trial team meetings, site initiation visits, and monitoring visits as required
- Contribute to quality assurance activities including internal audit of trial documentation, source data verification, and protocol deviation reporting
- Develop skills in trial design and statistical methodology, and contribute to grant applications, protocol development, or trial registration as appropriate
All fellows undertake a defined research or quality improvement project during the year, agreed with their supervisor at commencement. This may include clinical research, quality improvement initiatives, systematic reviews, or contribution to existing departmental or SESLHD research programs.

- MBBS or equivalent, current general registration with the Medical Board of Australia.
- FRACP fellowship in adult medicine (nephrology), or advanced training in nephrology working towards FRACP (minimum completion of RACP written and clinical examinations).
- Demonstrated clinical competence in nephrology
- Experience in Research methodology.
- Commitment to subspecialty development in the nominated stream
- Ability to work effectively within a multidisciplinary team
- Strong written and verbal communication skills
