Primary objective
To provide portfolio Ministers, the NT Government and its Authorities and Instrumentalities with high quality legal and policy
advice.
Context statement
The Legislation and Legal Policy Unit provides strategic legal and justice related policy advice to government. Legislation and
Legal Policy develops, reviews and implements legislative change across criminal, civil and regulatory laws in the portfolio of
the Attorney-General, advises the Attorney-General, other Ministers as relevant and the Government on policy, legal and
justice measures and provides ministerial support as necessary to the Attorney-General to enable the Minister to undertake
their functions and administrative responsibilities.
Key duties and responsibilities
1. Under direction, provide sound legal and policy advice.
2. Participate as requested in the development of legal policy and less complex legislative amendments.
3. Report to supervisor and Executive leadership on the progress of matters.
4. Develop and maintain a good level of knowledge of relevant areas of the law and of relevant practices and procedures.
5. Communicate effectively both orally and in writing and prepare Cabinet Submissions, ministerials, briefing papers and
other correspondence.
6. Represent Legislation and Legal Policy, liaise with clients and deal with people and issues in a professional manner.
7. Organise work to manage priorities effectively and meet deadlines.
8. Accept responsibility for the content and presentation of all documents produced.
Selection criteria
Essential
1. Admission as an Australian legal practitioner and eligibility to obtain a local practising certificate.
2. A minimum of 12 months experience in the practice of law in relevant or related fields.
3. Experience in the organisation and management of a personal legal practice.
4. Proven conceptual, analytical and collaborative skills in researching and evaluating issues, defining options and preparing
recommendations as directed.
5. Ability to negotiate effectively and to communicate in a professional manner.
6. Ability to manage workload to meet government needs and deadlines, to cope with pressure and to work as part of a
team.
7. Ability to provide legal policy advice while maintaining the highest standards of ethics and accountability.
Desirable
1. Knowledge of, and ability to, interpret a wide range of Northern Territory legislation.
