Are you passionate about protecting Queensland's waterways and using science to support environmental outcomes? Join our Water Quality Monitoring and Investigations team and contribute to two of the state's key water quality monitoring programs: the Great Barrier Reef Catchment Loads Monitoring Program and the South East Queensland Event Monitoring Program.
These programs play an important role in supporting the Department's monitoring, reporting and environmental management responsibilities under Reef Plan and Healthy Waterways initiatives. The team also undertakes environmental nvestigations and scientific assessments relating to pollution events, ecotoxicology, water quality and aquatic ecosystem health.
As a Scientist (PO3), you will support senior scientists in delivering high-quality monitoring outcomes through data analysis, quality assurance and quality control activities, stakeholder engagement, scientific reporting and technical support. You will collaborate with monitoring partners, contribute to the development of monitoring procedures and help drive continuous improvement across the program. Occasional field work may be required during event monitoring periods.
In this role you will:
- Initiate, build and maintain positive working relationships with internal and external stakeholders and provide professional support to senior scientists and the wider team, including assistance with the monitoring network.
- Identify training needs and coordinate and provide advice, technical and content support in the development and delivery of training resources/workshops/seminars/briefings.
- Develop and refine state-wide procedures for waterway event monitoring including the application of near-real time sensing equipment and develop and deliver scientific/technical briefings, reports and other resources in a variety of formats.
- Establish and provide ongoing scientific/technical advice and field/laboratory support for Government agencies, and community-based waterway monitoring networks in relation to monitoring design, sampling methodologies, data management, interpretation, reporting, quality control and quality assurance.

We are seeking a motivated scientist with strong analytical skills and a passion for environmental monitoring.
You will demonstrate:
- Role model as Individual Contributor leadership behaviours as outlined in the Leadership competencies for Queensland.
- Demonstrated expertise in data analysis (proficiency in R or other coding languages is highly desirable) for the assessment of water quality data.
- Demonstrated understanding of large datasets, and experience with cloud-based data management and analytics platforms (such as Azure Databricks or Azure Data Factory). Familiarity with water quality data or high-frequency monitoring data is highly desirable.
- Experience in applying knowledge of data visualisation via multiple forms of digital and non-digital communication, including an ability to report and present scientific and technical information.
- Demonstrated ability to plan and prioritise multiple tasks to ensure delivery of project outputs in a timely manner.
- Demonstrated ability in strong communication, liaison, negotiation and interpersonal skills and the ability to work independently as well as part of a team environment.
