Primary objective
Contribute to the delivery of a culturally appropriate health care service for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander patients by
providing a liaison service within Royal Darwin Hospital/Palmerston Regional Hospital. Establish and maintain rapport with
patients, offering support, and advocating on their behalf. Ensure Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people have access
to information in relation to health services by providing a variety of approaches to information and education.
Key duties and responsibilities
1. Provide culturally appropriate assistance, support, and quality care for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people by
providing a liaison service to assist patients and families during their hospitalisation.
2. Work closely with the multi-disciplinary teams (Doctors, Nurses/Aboriginal Health Practitioners, Physiotherapists, and
Allied Health Workers) and networking with government and non-government agencies.
3. Ensure accurate documentation of patients file notes and record keeping is maintained at a high level.
4. Participate in unit meetings, business planning, staff essential training and quality improvement activities.
5. Preparedness and capacity to work rotating weekend shift roster
6. Follow defined service quality standards, work health and safety policies and procedures relating to the work being
undertaken in order to ensure high quality, safe services and workplaces.
7. Foster a positive workplace culture through exemplary leadership practices and role modelling behaviour.
Selection criteria
Essential
1. Proven ability to engage and interact effectively with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and health professionals
from diverse cultures in remote and urban locations.
2. Proven knowledge and awareness of cultural and cross cultural issues affecting Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander
people in today’s society in health and wellbeing.
3. Demonstrated high level of communication skills relating to liaising and advocating effectively with and on behalf of
Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander patients and their families in a culturally appropriate manner.
4. A demonstrated high standard of oral and written communication skills and experience in using Microsoft computer
programs and accessing databases.
5. The ability to work with the multi-disciplinary teams and to work as an effective team member.
6. Demonstrated ability to work independently with minimal supervision, determining priorities, meeting deadlines,
organising daily workloads, planning, organising and participating in staff education sessions and programmes.
