The role
Consumer Protection promotes fair trading and consumer protection across Western Australia. Within Consumer Protection, the Conciliation and Trader Intervention Branch (the branch) undertake activities helping business and consumers resolve disputes.
The branch is a diverse and multicultural representation of the Western Australian community. We are values led and impact driven, aiming to help the community with the problems they are facing. Our approach is guided by our responsibilities under the law, but it’s built around our consumers and traders – focused on bringing people together to find fair, practical solutions to help resolve the matter. We are looking for someone who aligns with those values and aims to have a positive impact on the community.
As a Senior Conciliation Officer (Mediation), you will provide dispute resolution services and give advice on matters across various regulatory areas including the Australian Consumer Law, tenancy matters, the motor vehicle industry and other sectors.
This could involve, for example, analysing a complaint received from a resident of a retirement village against the retirement village operator to determine what the legislative rights and responsibilities are of each party. You will then mediate the dispute with the aim of reaching an agreement that is reasonable according to legislation and which is fair to both parties, helping them to maintain an effective working relationship.
You will bring to the role your experience in resolving disputes and share your learnings to build capability within the team.

While this selection process will initially be used to fill the above vacancy, it may also be used to fill other similar vacancies (permanent, fixed-term, full-time or part-time) within the department for the next 12 months, from the date that the recruitment breach period has been finalised.
Eligibility
To be eligible for a permanent appointment, applicants must be an Australian citizen, permanent resident, or have a visa to live and work indefinitely in Australia at the time of application. Applicants with a valid visa to work and live in Australia for a specific duration may be assessed and considered suitable for similar fixed term vacancies that arise.
Should a qualification be required for this position, applicants must provide their certification and/or academic transcripts to verify relevance to the job requirements. Qualifications obtained outside of Australia must be provided with an assessment from the Overseas Qualifications Unit to ensure they meet Australian Standards (this is a free service).
To work for LGIRS, you must consent to a Nationally Coordinated Criminal History Check and obtain a clearance before you start. If deemed suitable, LGIRS will coordinate and pay for your NCCHC as part of your pre-employment checks.
