Senior Security Engineer (Fixed & Core Network Security)
Job Summary
As a Senior Security Engineer (Fixed & Core Network Security), you are an expert in Telecommunications, Transport & IP, Automation, Infrastructure as Code, DoSP, and/or Cyber Security. You apply your expertise in security technologies, standards, and policies to design, implement, operate, and continuously improve security capabilities across Telstra’s Service Provider and Core Network environments.
Working closely with Engineering, Operations, Architecture, Product, Cyber Security, and vendor teams, you embed security controls into network platforms, services, and change initiatives, ensuring risks are proactively identified, managed, and reduced. You contribute to security assurance, vulnerability management, compliance, automation, telemetry, and security uplift activities that strengthen the resilience of Telstra’s critical network infrastructure.
You play a key role in delivering Telstra’s security strategy and protecting the confidentiality, integrity, and availability of Telstra’s platforms, networks, applications, and services.

What You’ll Do
Network, Product and Technology (NPT) - Security & Operations is responsible for Telstra's security and operations, protecting Telstra's assets and infrastructure.
Define and operationalise, in collaboration with key stakeholders, appropriate security controls across networks and cloud platforms to protect Telstra and customer information, systems, and network assets.
Provide security design and architecture assurance input for network solutions, with a particular focus on Telstra’s service provider, fixed and core network environments.
Provide input into the security strategy, standards and frameworks to ensure security controls and hygiene are built into network and cloud engineering designs and processes.
Work collaboratively with network engineering, operations, DevSecOps, and cyber security teams to ensure security requirements are understood and effectively implemented.
Authentically engage with the business and leverage customer feedback to initiate continuous improvements in security engineering and technology designs that are fit for purpose and meet customer requirements.
Foster a culture of continuous improvement and coaching by modelling Telstra and best practice security engineering standards and actively develop less experienced engineers through coaching, mentoring and collaboration.
Demonstrate strong written and verbal communication skills in promoting security awareness and / or network or technology issues to Leaders / stakeholders.
Deliver outcomes to a high standard by actively collaborating in security capability design, change implementation and support of platform, applications, services and product issues.
Significantly contribute to the design, build, installation, integration and maintenance of a variety of network technologies, platforms, applications, services, products and/or systems.
Document your work to ensure that business continuity, security and operational activity can seamlessly be supported and maintained by others.
Actively engage in enhancing and improving CI/CD capabilities (testing, automation) to reduce cycle time while retaining quality.
Ensure solutions are re-usable, scalable, reliable, manageable and operable and align with the Telstra technology strategic directions and meet any specific OKR’s.
Assess capability of vendor solutions and offerings to meet business requirements.
Take an active role in managing vendor performance and technology delivery to ensure that agreed technical functionality, time and cost outcomes are met.
About You
General knowledge and experience with security engineering related to Fixed, Transport & IP Networks, DoSP and/or DevSecOps.
Understanding of traditional Network and Cloud native security components (e.g., firewalls, proxies, WAF, identity and access managment, threat prevention, vulnerability management, secure external access, secrets management, PKI/RPKI, PAM, SIEM logging and monitoring, IDS/IPS, DoSP, Infrastructure As Code, Micro Segmentation, Zero Trust architecture etc.).
Technical skills across TCP/IP Routing, SDN and virtualised networking, Radio Access Networks, LINUX, Docker, Kubernetes or Application Security.
Ability to work with DevSecOps, Networks and Cloud Security teams on CI/CD and orchestration security for virtual and containerised network functions and applications.
Familiar with Agile tools and methodologies.
Familiar with Industry Security Frameworks, Standards and Guidelines including SOCI, CIS & NIST
Excellent interpersonal skills as you’ll be required to collaborate with other Network, Security and Cloud SMEs and coordinate with external groups for security engagements and integrations with external systems.
