The Role
This role offers a rare opportunity to combine teaching HASS, educational leadership and active individual mentoring of students in their final year.
Class 12 Projects:
In Term 1 2027, you will take responsibility for the 18 or so Year 12 students and actively guide and support them through their Year 12 Independent Projects.
The projects are a unique feature of Steiner Education which involves each student researching a question or theme and:
- Writing a formal essay on their project topic, fully referenced.
- Creating and completing a practical initiative linked to their project topic – something “in the world”.
- Giving a formal 30-minute presentation to the school community on their Project – think TED talk.
- Keeping a detailed journal of their Project experience.
This Independent Project is directly linked to whether a student graduates from a Steiner school and is the culmination of their school experience from childhood to becoming an adult. It’s often remarked that it is a wonderful privilege to do this type of work with motivated and creative young people. You will be well supported, and we are fortunate to have relatively minimal behaviour issues in our school. So, you can be a teacher!
Humanities (HASS) Teacher Years 8–12
Teach HASS Main Lessons and weekly Humanities across Years 8–12 and Year 11 and 12 Elective lessons.
Main Lessons are extended teaching blocks, taught each morning over several weeks, allowing students and teachers to explore a particular historical period, geographical theme, social issue or area of study in much greater depth. They provide opportunities for rich discussion, research, debate, project work and immersive learning, and are a distinctive and highly valued feature of Steiner education.
Weekly lessons and electives complement the Main Lessons by providing ongoing development of knowledge and skills in single or double periods.
Our school does not participate in WACE subjects; however, the Steiner curriculum is aligned to the WA Curriculum.
About You
You are an educator and leader who is organised and brings warmth, clarity, and inspiration. You understand that senior students need both freedom and guidance, and you can hold the rigour of the task, whilst supporting their individual needs, as they take on new levels of responsibility. You bring:
- Experience working with high school students. Preferably Senior students but that is not essential.
- Strong organisational skills and the ability to coordinate multiple projects and people.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills including an above average social emotional intelligence.
- A capacity to mentor both staff and students and a willingness to engage with parents while also being good at keeping your boundaries.
- An openness to working with the principles of Steiner education and supporting the developmental stage of late adolescence.
- Excellent skill, grasp and love of teaching HASS to Years 8 -12 via a thematic/genre-based approach.
Essential Requirements:
- Current TRBWA teacher registration
- Current Working with Children Check
- Right to work in Australia (Please note there is no sponsorship available)
