Nepean Hospital is an important referral and teaching hospital of the University of Sydney. It serves the local areas of Penrith, Hawkesbury and the Blue Mountains (comprising a population of 300,000 and growing) and accepts patients from as far as Lithgow and Bathurst flown in by helicopter retrieval services. Nepean Hospital is the Regional Trauma Centre for these areas.
The role of the Intensive Care Unit is to provide Intensive Care services to the community as well as providing emergency response to all wards within the hospital.
What you'll be doing
- Clinical management of ICU patients under supervision, including the resuscitation and management of unstable patients within the ICU and hospital.
- Undertake review of ICU and ward patients as required, attend ward rounds, prescribe drugs, fluids and ventilator settings.
- Conducting transports for procedures outside the ICU according to CICM standards for transport of the critically ill (depending on experience).
- Participating in the Medical Emergency Team and the hospital Trauma Team.
- Various procedures such as arterial lines, central lines, PICC line insertions etc.
- Learning basic ultrasound associated with critical illness.
- Participating in 24/7 rotating roster of days, evenings and nights including weekends
Where you'll be working
- The department consists of 24 ICU beds. The unit has 9 Staff Specialists, 4 Provisional Fellows, 10 Trainees, 4 Senior Medical Resident Officers and 4 Residents.
- The unit is world-renowned for its Critical Care Ultrasound teaching and research.
- SRMOs will have 4 rotations during their 12 month appointment which include:
- Nepean ICU
- Orange ICU
- Nepean Anaesthesia
- Nepean Emergency Department
- The facilities at the Nepean Hospital include:
- A large and busy Emergency Department, a tertiary obstetric department, and multiple medical and surgical specialties such as neurosurgery, thoracic surgery, infectious diseases, coronary care and cardiac catheter lab, with an on-site Mental Health Unit.
- Radiology and Pathology is operational 24/7.
