Primary objective
Lead the delivery of Northern Territory fisheries operations, including ensuring the management arrangements and
administrative regulatory functions are effectively implemented and supported by data-informed, risk-based decision-
making to achieve sustainable and compliant fisheries outcomes.
Context statement
The Fisheries Division is responsible for the sustainable management and regulation of the Northern Territory’s fisheries
resources. The Manager Fisheries Operations is responsible for leading the day-to-day implementation of fisheries
management arrangements, including the administrative and regulatory functions, which are informed by monitoring and
interpretation of fisheries data to support operational decisions, and working closely with the science, policy, licensing and
compliance teams across the Division.
Key duties and responsibilities
1. Oversee the day-to-day management and administration of NT fisheries, ensuring effective implementation of
management arrangements and operational controls.
2. Manage administrative regulatory functions, including licence conditions, harvest strategies, quota management and
reporting frameworks, supporting a risk-based, contemporary regulatory approach.
3. Oversee the monitoring and interpretation of fisheries data to inform operational decision-making and support
sustainable stock outcomes, working in partnership with the science and data team.
4. Manage and develop a team delivering fisheries management and administrative regulatory functions, fostering a high-
performing and outcomes-focused culture.
5. Oversee budgets, resource allocation and operational priorities to deliver efficient and effective fisheries management
outcomes.
6. Work closely with policy, licensing and compliance teams, and engage with industry and stakeholders to support
consistent, transparent and effective fisheries management.
Selection criteria
Essential
1. Demonstrated ability to lead and manage teams, including setting priorities, managing performance and building
capability.
2. Demonstrated high level experience in fisheries management or related natural resource management.
3. Proven ability to implement management frameworks, operational plans or regulatory systems effectively.
4. Proven ability to interpret and apply data and information to support evidence-based, risk-informed decision-making.
5. Excellent stakeholder engagement, communication and relationship management skills, with experience working with
industry, government and/or community stakeholders.
6. Demonstrated experience managing budgets, resources and competing priorities to achieve operational outcomes.
Desirable
1. Relevant tertiary qualifications in fisheries science, marine or environmental management, or a related field.
2. Knowledge of modern regulatory approaches, including risk-based, outcomes-focused, or intelligence-led regulation.
