Paediatric Surgical SRMO positions are available at Sydney Children's Hospital, Randwick, for the 2027 Clinical Year from 01 February 2027 to 06 February 2028. The position provides an opportunity for SRMOs to further develop paediatric surgical skills in the spheres of clinical care and surgical procedures under the supervision of consultant paediatric surgeons.
The SRMO’s responsibilities will include providing surgical support to the patients of paediatric Staff Specialists and Visiting Medical Officers, trauma and emergency support to the patients in all clinical areas of the hospital including the Emergency Department, Intensive Care Unit, inpatient and outpatient areas and at Royal Hospital for Women. The Surgical SRMO works closely with all members of a multi-disciplinary team and deals with matters of an urgent or sensitive nature, whilst exercising discretion, sensitivity and maintaining confidentiality. Paediatric SRMOs will primarily work in the paediatric general surgery department with rotations in orthopaedics or neurosurgery for 3 months providing the trainee the widest paediatric surgical experience. Surgical trainees (accredited and unaccredited) and consultants (Staff Specialists and VMOs) are on site during the day to provide supervision and teaching.

Selection Criteria:

MBBS or equivalent, currently registered or eligible for registration with the Medical Board of Australia in an appropriate registration category

Minimum two years postgraduate experience

Demonstrated interest in surgical or paediatric training

Excellent communication skills and demonstrated ability to liaise effectively with other health professionals. Please provide an example

Demonstrated ability to work in a multidisciplinary team which includes other medical staff, allied health staff, nursing staff and other ward staff to ensure the appropriate management of the patient. Please provide an example

Demonstrated experience in taking comprehensive patient history, performing clinical examination and accurately documenting treatment in patient’s record. Please provide an example

Demonstrated skills in time management, prioritisation and problem solving

Ongoing commitment to further education and professional development and demonstrated ability to teach, and willingness to participate in the teaching of Medical Students, Junior Medical Staff and other clinical staff
