What you’ll be leading
As a Protection and Control Engineer, you will play a critical role in the design, implementation, and commissioning of electrical protection systems for largescale photovoltaic (solar farm) projects across Australia.
You will be responsible for ensuring the safe, reliable, and efficient operation of high-voltage (HV) grid connections, integrating solar generation assets into the national electricity network. Your work will involve protection scheme design, relay settings and configuration, coordination studies, and supporting commissioning activities on site.
You’ll report to the Head of substation.
Your main responsibilities:
- Design HV protection schemes for grid-tied solar farms (e.g., primary and backup protection, fault detection, islanding protection).
- Perform coordination and selectivity studies for protection settings.
- Configure and test protection relays (e.g., SEL, Siemens Siprotec, ABB Relion).
- Support Factory Acceptance Testing (FAT), Site Acceptance Testing (SAT), and commissioning.
- Review and validate grid compliance studies (including R1/R2 submissions for AEMO).
- Troubleshoot and resolve protection-related issues during construction and operation phases.
- Ensure alignment with Australian grid codes and network operator standards.
- Liaise with NSPs and AEMO during the connection approval process.
- Contribute to technical risk assessments and support project delivery schedules.
The profile we’re looking for
- Master’s/Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Power Systems, or a related field
- 3–5 years of experience in Protection & Control engineering,
- Experience managing recruitment, employee relations, and performance management processes.
- Strong understanding of HV systems (33kV, 66kV, 132kV and above) and protection principles.
- Experience with relay configuration tools (e.g., DIGSI, SEL AcSELerator, PCM600).
- Familiarity with Australian grid connection processes and standards.
- Ability to interpret single-line diagrams, protection schematics, and interlocking logics.
- Excellent problem-solving skills and ability to work independently and in multidisciplinary teams
Our recruitment process
- An initial conversation with the recruiter/Local HR
- One or two interviews with the hiring manager or relevant team lead
