Primary objective
As part of a team, provide high quality administrative and paralegal support to the Northern Territory Fire and Emergency
Service (NTFES) Legal Unit and the wider NTFES Corporate Services Division.
Context statement
The NTFES Legal Unit provides legal advice and services to the Commissioner and CEO of Fire and Emergency Services.
Key duties and responsibilities
1. Provide high level paralegal support, including; undertaking research, developing comparisons and commentary (including
cross-jurisdictional analysis, case summaries, and analysis) and other legal support to the lawyers based in the
NTFES Legal Unit.
2. Provide high level legal administration support, including; responding to phone enquiries, booking travel/vehicles,
maintaining file and document management systems, and other administration tasks as directed.
3. Prepare draft legal documentation, ministerials, flash briefs and other briefing papers, correspondence to stakeholders,
debate notes and other documents for NTFES lawyers.
4. Liaise with Secretariat in relation to timing of ministerials and flash briefs, and any other Cabinet documents.
5. Assist with the coordination of stakeholder consultation across government and non-government, provide secretarial
support for meetings and working groups as required.
6. Undertake the functions of an Executive Officer to provide administrative support for the Director, NTFES Legal.
7. Manage a range of concurrent activities in a timely and efficient manner with minimum supervision, ensuring adherence
to competing deadlines.
Selection criteria
Essential
1. Proven experience as a paralegal, legal secretary or other law-related position.
2. Proven experience in research and the preparation of draft reports, ministerial/Cabinet correspondence or similar.
3. Sound organisational and analytical skills and high level of self-management, including a proven ability to determine
workload priorities, work under pressure, and meet stringent deadlines without close supervision in a busy environment,
contributing to team success.
4. Sound interpersonal skills together with good oral and written communication skills. Be able to communicate effectively
with the public, peers and other agency officers.
5. Experience in document and file management, including a sound working knowledge of word processing and spreadsheet
programs.
6. Experience working in a cross-cultural environment.
Desirable
1. Certificate in Legal Studies, or study towards a degree in law or similar.
2. Experience in the interpretation and application of legislation.
