About the Role
Reporting to the Coordinator, you will lead the day-to-day operations of the Municipal Laws team - guiding officers, managing complex cases, and ensuring effective service delivery across the municipality.
This hands-on leadership role blends people management, operational oversight, and compliance expertise, while supporting broader community safety and emergency management outcomes.

Lead Municipal Laws operations - Provide day‑to‑day leadership, coaching and support to Municipal Laws Officers, ensuring efficient workflows, continuous improvement, and alignment with Council’s community amenity goals.
Manage complex matters - Support the Coordinator and Department Management Team by handling sensitive or high‑priority service requests, maintaining accurate records and contributing to statutory and corporate reporting.
Oversee key compliance portfolios - Lead and coordinate areas such as local laws compliance, animal management, litter abatement and footpath/itinerant trading, including acting as the Municipal Assistant Fire Prevention Officer through delegated authority.
This role is part of Banyule’s Leadership Network – you’ll have opportunities to grow your skills and experience of leadership in a Local Government context and develop your skills as an organisational leader beyond your role-based expertise.
About you/what you’ll bring
1. Excellent leadership skills and the ability to manage a team and to achieve required objectives with the ability to develop and implement work procedures and strategies
2. Tertiary qualification and/or significant experience in a relevant discipline, or, specialist experience in a relevant field
3. Well-developed verbal communication and interpersonal skills, including demonstrated conflict resolution, ability to liaise and negotiate at all levels and, with a wide range of stakeholders
4. Well-developed written communication skills to produce material designed to meet the needs of diverse audiences; deliver reports, and work with direct reporting staff on performance development planning/ goal setting
5. Commitment to quality customer service and the development and empowerment of staff
6. Ability to manage competing priorities

- Nationally Coordinated Criminal History Check

- Salary $113,252.44 to $126,351.47 per annum (dependent on experience) plus super

This role forms part of the Animal After Hours On Call Service and will be required to participate in an out of hours roster.
