The Northern Sydney Coastal Network may offer one ( or two ( year contracts (as required for completion of their length of training) to applicants who have completed their time in an accredited BPT role. All other applicants will be offered a three ( year contract, subject to change, with final rankings from the application process and service provision requirements determining the length of training contract that will be offered.
Previous or current registration with RACP in non-BPT roles does not guarantee a two ( year contract
Please note that once a BPT offer is accepted, any application you may for any subsequent round BPT position during 2026 AMR campaign will not be considered whilst you are holding that offer.

The Northern Sydney Coastal BPT Network has training positions in Royal North Shore Hospital, Northern Beaches Hospital, Gosford and Lismore Base Hospitals. All are teaching hospitals affiliated with Sydney University and the University of Newcastle. Our metropolitan sites are busy with exposure to a wide variety of presentations and patient populations. Our rural sites offer tremendous opportunity to see a diverse range of clinical medicine where you will start to develop the key decision-making and clinical judgement skills of a physician.

What you'll be doing
The primary purpose of the Basic Physician Trainee (BPT) is to provide effective medical services to patients under supervision, while developing expertise in medical practice in a complex clinical environment in inpatient and outpatient areas in the public health organisations within the Network.
Basic Physician Training roles consist of rotations through medical departments, working under an appropriate level of supervision by consultants. Rotations have different levels of responsibility and team structures. BPTs will gain increasing clinical autonomy and accountability as team leaders throughout the course of the three-year training program, building on their skills and attributes with the goal of entering an Advanced Training program.
BPTs undertaking the care of medical patients should ensure that they operate within their own level of expertise within a collaborative clinical care model and to seek consultation with the treating physician when appropriate, in the following activities:

Clinically assess patients, incorporating consultation/history taking, examination, and formulation of a differential diagnosis and management plans

Discuss diagnoses and management plans with patients and their families or carers

Document the progress of patients in multiple settings

Prescribe medications tailored to patients’ needs and conditions

Transfer care of patients

Choose, organise and interpret investigations

Assess and manage acutely unwell patients

Plan, prepare for, perform, and provide after care for important procedures

MBBS or equivalent, current general registration with the Medical Board of Australia

This role requires eligibility for or current registration as a Basic Physician Trainee with the Royal Australasian College of Physicians (RACP) and intent to obtain Fellowship of the RACP. What is your current RACP status?

Demonstrated recent relevant experience in clinical medicine and ability to work in a complex clinical environment with proven ability to apply clinical knowledge and concepts in practical situations. (Limit response to 1500 characters)

Occupational Assessment, Screening and Vaccination against Specific Diseases
To be employed by NSW Health, applicants must provide evidence of vaccination and comply with the NSW Health Occupational Assessment, Screening and Vaccination Against Specified Infectious Diseases Policy Directive (PD2024_01. Compliance with this policy, including any amendments made from time to time, is a mandatory condition of employment.
Applicants will be required to provide acceptable evidence of their vaccination status, immunity, and any other occupational health requirements relevant to the position. Evidence must be submitted and assessed in accordance with NSW Health requirements prior to commencement.

This position requires a Working With Children Check (WWCC) clearance issued by Service NSW. A current and valid WWCC is a mandatory requirement for appointment to this role.
