Senior Tourism and Events Officer
This is a temporary full-time position from Monday, 3rd August 2026 – Friday, 8 September 2028.
We’re seeking a passionate and highly organised Senior Tourism and Events Officer to lead the delivery of major initiatives that drive visitation, grow our events calendar, and support the region’s economic development.
In this pivotal role, you’ll coordinate key tourism and event programs while working closely with industry, government, and community stakeholders to position Mackay as a leading destination.
About the role
Working under limited direction, you will lead the coordination of Council’s tourism and events initiatives, including the Invest Mackay Events and Conference Attraction Program and key actions from the region’s Economic Development Strategy.
Key responsibilities include:
- Coordinating programs that support local event organisers, including access to funding, services and development opportunities
- Delivering the Invest Mackay Events and Conference Attraction Program and events activation initiatives (including Amplify Mackay)
- Overseeing the Mackay Events website and development of promotional materials
- Undertaking research and data analysis on tourism, event and economic trends
- Contributing to strategic initiatives aligned with Council’s Corporate Plan and Economic Development Strategy
- Building strong partnerships with government, industry and community stakeholders
- Representing Council at meetings, events and public forums, including public speaking
- Preparing reports and contributing to key economic development outcomes
What you’ll bring
Essential
- Tertiary qualifications in economics, business, planning or a related discipline (or equivalent 5+ years experience)
- QLD “C” Class Driver’s Licence
- Demonstrated experience in tourism, events, economic development or a related field
- Strong experience coordinating projects and delivering outcomes within timeframes and budgets
- Experience managing sponsorships or grant funding programs, including reporting and compliance
- Proven ability to build and maintain strong stakeholder relationships across industry and government
- Strong analytical, research and problem-solving skills
- Excellent communication skills, including report writing and stakeholder engagement
- Highly developed organisational skills, initiative and ability to work autonomously
Desirable
- Experience within Local Government
- Experience using Adobe Suite or economic modelling tools (e.g. REMPLAN)
