Team Leader Water Treatment
Are you an experienced water treatment professional with strong leadership capability and a commitment to safe, reliable service delivery? Mackay Regional Council is seeking a Team Leader Water Treatment to oversee and support the continuous operation, monitoring and maintenance of Council’s water treatment plants in accordance with regulatory requirements.
About this opportunity:
As the Team Leader Water Treatment, you will oversee and assist with the operation, monitoring and maintenance activities of Mackay’s water treatment plants. This role provides leadership to treatment operations teams, supports plant performance through sampling, analysis and process control, and helps ensure work is completed safely, efficiently and in line with statutory obligations, adopted procedures and Council’s service standards.
Key Responsibilities
- Oversee the efficient, economic and continuous operation of water treatment plants, including start-up, shut-down and periodic operating checks.
- Provide effective leadership, coaching and mentoring to treatment operations staff, fostering open communication and a cooperative team-based approach.
- Oversee sampling, laboratory testing, data review and plant performance adjustments to help maintain water quality and operational compliance.
- Perform and coordinate routine preventative maintenance, operating adjustments, cleaning of equipment and maintenance of plant structures, buildings and grounds.
- Maintain accurate plant records, including operating logs, daily diaries, chemical inventories, data logs, laboratory results and reports.
- Provide accurate technical advice to internal and external clients and contribute to improved work practices, productivity and process documentation.
- Support workplace health and safety through audits, risk assessments, site inductions, toolbox meetings and safe work practices.
- Contribute to continuous improvement initiatives across Water Treatment, including mobile computing, data management and integrated management systems.
Essential Qualifications, Experience & Skills:
- Certificate 3 Water Industry Operations(water)
- Current Queensland “C” Class Driver’s Licence or interstate equivalent.
- Current White Card – Course in General Safety Induction (Construction Industry).
- Experience leading treatment operations teams and supporting effective teamwork, communication and supervision.
- Demonstrated competence operating and maintaining essential process plant, including disinfection systems, to produce water quality that meets relevant Australian guidelines.
- Documented experience conducting sampling and laboratory testing, including interpreting results to support plant operation.
- Sound knowledge of water treatment processes, groundwater systems, plant operation, preventative maintenance, chemical hazards, risk assessments and procedures.
- Ability to work unsupervised, resolve operational problems, evaluate business risk and safely perform manual handling tasks.
- Well-developed interpersonal, communication, mathematical, report keeping and problem-solving skills, with the ability to work flexibly across multiple sites.
Desirable Qualifications, Experience & Skills:
- First Aid Certificate and Confined Space Certificate.
- Current Self-Contained Breathing Apparatus certificate.
- Sound spreadsheet, word processing and data entry skills.
- Ability to read and understand mechanical and engineering drawings.
- Ability to plan and coordinate minor projects, write reports and liaise with consultants and members of the public.
- Knowledge of PLC/SCADA systems, flowmeters, pressure transducers, scientific field and laboratory equipment and disinfection equipment.
