Gympie Regional Council is seeking an experienced and safety-focused Landfill Plant Operator to join our Waste and Resource Recovery team. This is a hands-on role where you'll operate specialised heavy plant, help construct and maintain landfill infrastructure, and play an important part in protecting the environment while delivering an essential service to our community.
Working as part of a small, skilled team, no two days are the same.
What you'll be doing
In this role you will:
- Operate a range of heavy plant including the landfill compactor, bulldozer, excavator, loader and other specialised equipment.
- Construct, maintain and rehabilitate landfill cells by spreading, compacting and covering waste in accordance with operational and environmental requirements.
- Maintain safe and efficient landfill operations by controlling dust, litter, weeds, pests and stormwater.
- Direct customers and contractors safely around the active landfill and assist with traffic management where required.
- Inspect incoming loads and identify prohibited or hazardous waste in accordance with Council procedures.
- Carry out routine servicing, inspections and minor maintenance of plant and equipment.
- Assist with general site maintenance and labouring duties as required.
- Contribute to a positive team culture while maintaining a strong commitment to safety, environmental compliance and customer service.
What you'll bring (essential knowledge and skills)
To be successful in this role, you'll have:
- Demonstrated experience operating heavy plant such as excavators, loaders, bulldozers, compactors or similar equipment.
- Sound mechanical aptitude and experience undertaking routine servicing and maintenance of plant.
- The ability to work safely, independently and as part of a team.
- Well-developed communication and customer service skills.
- A current Queensland HR Driver Licence (or higher).
- Construction White Card.
- Competencies in loader, roller and skid steer/backhoe operation (or the ability to obtain and maintain them).

You'll be part of a team responsible for operating and maintaining one of the region's most important pieces of environmental infrastructure, ensuring waste is managed safely and in accordance with environmental approvals.
Please note this position operates on a seven-day roster and includes weekend work.
