Be a member of a multi-disciplinary team working on a broad research program aimed at improving the detection, management, and novel prevention strategies for better outcomes in cardiovascular disease
Base Salary HEO5 ($93,345 - $104,515) + 17% superannuation
About the opportunity
The Kolling Institute is a joint venture between The University of Sydney and the Northern Sydney Health District. Based in the Royal North Shore Hospital, the institute focuses on three key research priority areas, these include Musculoskeletal , Neuroscience and Pain , and Cardiovascular and Renal research.
The Research Assistant will join the Cardiology Research Group and provide technical and operational support to the research program. You will have the opportunity to work on numerous projects that relate to the discovery of new biomarkers and therapeutic targets-which span cell culture models, preclinical models, immunophenotyping, and human clinical studies.
Your key responsibilities are:
prepare relevant materials in collaboration with team members, performing fundamental aspects of research work, and facilitating the efficient operation of the research laboratory by providing essential technical and operational support
coordinate the activities associated with research projects, and work towards ensuring that experiments are prepared for and run smoothly
responsibility for any lab work carried out by students, provide teaching support (in terms of demonstrations in tutorials/practicals) and prepare equipment for experiments that are carried out
facilitating the efficient operation of the research laboratory by providing essential technical and operational support.
About you
extensive experience in developing and working on research projects, including expertise in using and preparing research protocols, experimental design, laboratory records, inventory, and procurement
previous experience in cell tissue culture and general biomolecular techniques (RNA extraction and protein isolation and quantitation, western blotting, PCR, genotyping, ELISAs etc.). Preclinical animal models, blood processing, flow cytometry and analytical (e.g. FlowJo software) skills are desirable
experience in carrying out scientific literary searches, and preparing literary reviews for further analysis
advanced skills data analysis, using statistical analysis tools, and reporting on research findings
working understanding of relevant aspects of the Work Health and Safety Policy and relevant legislation, including Safe Laboratory Practices, as applicable to the work environment
previous experience in a research-intensive environment
excellent interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills with sound negotiating and conflict resolution skills and a demonstrated level of tact and discretion in dealing with day-to-day operational matters
the ability to work both independently and as part of a team, taking initiative and exercising sound judgement in resolving matters that may arise as part of normal daily work.
