## Surveying or Spatial Science Technician
## Position Overview
We are looking for a detail-oriented and technically proficient Surveying or Spatial Science Technician to join our team and support the delivery of high-quality spatial data and mapping outcomes. In this role, you will work alongside Surveyors, Cartographers, and Spatial Scientists to collect, process, and evaluate spatial information used to inform planning, construction, and land management projects. This position is well suited to a motivated individual with a strong foundation in spatial sciences, surveying techniques, and geospatial technologies who is eager to contribute to meaningful, real-world projects across Australia.
## Key Responsibilities
- Assist construction managers, architects, and surveyors in the planning and organisation of surveying operations, ensuring fieldwork and office tasks are delivered accurately and on schedule
- Interpret and apply plans, technical drawings, regulations, and codes of practice to support project delivery and compliance requirements
- Collect spatial data in the field using surveying instruments, GPS equipment, total stations, and photogrammetric technology
- Prepare preliminary sketches, working drawings, and detailed specifications to support project planning and design phases
- Prepare, edit, revise, and maintain maps, charts, drawings, and spatial databases to ensure accuracy and currency of geospatial records
- Perform routine computations, data reduction, and preliminary plotting of survey data using industry-standard software
- Maintain and quality-check spatial datasets, identifying and rectifying errors or inconsistencies to uphold data integrity
- Support the production of reports, plans, and documentation for internal teams, clients, and regulatory bodies
- Liaise with project stakeholders, contractors, and team members to coordinate survey activities and ensure project milestones are met
- Operate and maintain surveying and spatial science equipment in accordance with safety protocols and manufacturer guidelines
- Assist in the development and updating of GIS databases, contributing to spatial analysis and mapping outputs as required
## Required Qualifications & Skills
- Certificate IV or Diploma in Surveying, Spatial Information Services, or a related discipline, or equivalent practical experience in a similar role
- Demonstrated experience using surveying instruments such as total stations, GPS/GNSS units, and levels in field environments
- Proficiency in GIS and CAD software, such as ArcGIS, QGIS, AutoCAD, or Civil 3D
- Sound understanding of spatial data collection, processing, and quality assurance principles
- Ability to interpret technical drawings, plans, and surveying regulations relevant to Australian standards
- Strong numerical aptitude with experience performing calculations, data reduction, and coordinate transformations
- Excellent attention to detail and a methodical approach to recording, managing, and presenting spatial information
- Good communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to work effectively as part of a multidisciplinary team
- Current driver's licence and willingness to travel to field sites as required
- Familiarity with Work Health and Safety (WHS) obligations relevant to field surveying environments
## Preferred Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Surveying, Geomatics, Spatial Science, or a related field
- Experience with photogrammetry, drone-based data capture (UAV), or LiDAR scanning technologies
- Associate or student membership with the Surveying and Spatial Sciences Institute (SSSI) or equivalent professional body
- Exposure to cadastral, engineering, or topographic surveying projects within an Australian context
- Experience using data management platforms or specialised survey processing software such as Trimble Business Center or Leica Infinity
- Knowledge of relevant Australian spatial data standards, including those set by ICSM or Geoscience Australia
