Details: The ACT Government Analytical Laboratory (ACTGAL) is seeking an experienced and motivated Assistant Director, Forensic Toxicology to join its leadership team within the Research, Programs and Scientific
Services Branch.
This is a unique opportunity to play a key role in a highly specialised forensic laboratory that delivers
accredited toxicology services supporting ACT legislation, public safety, and the justice system. The Forensic
Toxicology Unit analyses biological specimens for the presence of drugs, poisons, and other substances,
providing expert scientific advice, reporting, and evidence for legal and coronial matters.
As Assistant Director, you will lead and undertake complex toxicological investigations, oversee the delivery
of high-quality analytical services, and contribute to the strategic and operational management of the
laboratory. You will be responsible for preparing detailed scientific reports, presenting expert evidence in
court, maintaining quality systems and accreditation requirements, and supporting research, method
development, and validation activities.
The role also involves mentoring and developing staff, assisting with day-to-day laboratory operations, and
providing specialist advice to government agencies, law enforcement, and other stakeholders. Working
closely with the Director, Forensic Toxicology, you will help drive continuous improvement and ensure the
laboratory maintains the highest standards of scientific excellence and integrity.
This position is ideal for a forensic scientist with strong technical expertise, leadership capability, and a

Eligibility/Other requirements: Applicants for the role of Assistant Director, Forensic Toxicology will have:

Undergraduate degree in science (a major and/or postgraduate qualification in chemistry is highly desirable).

Current driver’s licence.

Prior to commencement, the successful candidate will be required to undergo a pre-employment National Police Check.
Notes: This is a temporary position available from 15 September 2026 until 23 February 2027 with the possibility of extension and/or permanency.A merit pool or merit list will be established from this selection process and will be used to fill vacancies over the next 12 months.
