HOTA, Home of the Arts Precinct
This role will be based at HOTA, Home of the Arts. HOTA is an iconic Gold Coast destination where art, entertainment, culture and lifestyle meet. A place that locals love and visitors must-see. HOTA offers a diverse suite of venues and facilities, including a gallery, outdoor stage, indoor theatres and cinemas, function and events rooms, as well as a range of food and beverage venues including the HOTA Café, the rooftop Exhibitionist Bar and three hat Palette Restaurant.
At the heart of HOTA’s identity is a rich and diverse program: live music, theatre, dance, comedy, film, visual art exhibitions, children’s shows, community workshops, and festivals – all taking place across the array of venues.
About the Role
The Part-Time Staging Technician role is responsible for supporting the day-to-day operation, maintenance, presentation, and delivery of staging services across HOTA’s venues and facilities.
Reporting to the Head of Staging and working with the wider Technical team, including Senior Staging Technicians and Production, the role contributes to the successful delivery of events, productions, exhibitions, performances, conferences, and venue activities through the preparation, installation, operation, and removal of staging equipment and infrastructure.
The position plays a key role in ensuring staging equipment, workspaces, storage areas, and technical spaces remain safe, organised, and operationally ready. The Staging Technician will regularly support venue setups, changeovers, bump-ins, bump-outs, rehearsals, performances, and event requirements across the precinct.
As an active member of the Technical department, the role is expected to contribute to event delivery, venue operations, production support, and show crew activities while maintaining high standards of safety, presentation, customer service, and technical excellence.
Key Responsibilities
Duties include, but are not limited to:
Staging Department Maintenance & Upkeep:
- Maintain staging equipment, infrastructure, and systems in a safe and operational condition.
- Undertake routine inspections, cleaning, testing, preventative maintenance, and fault reporting of staging equipment.
- Assist with test and tag activities and ensure equipment remains compliant and fit for use.
- Support the upkeep and presentation of staging workshops, storage areas, loading areas, and technical spaces.
- Assist with equipment repairs and maintenance as directed by the Head of Staging or Senior Staging Technicians.
- Identify damaged, faulty, or ageing equipment and report issues promptly.
- Maintain organised equipment storage, workshops, and staging areas.
- Prepare, inspect, clean, and return staging equipment following productions and events.
- Ensure equipment is correctly labelled, stored, maintained, and operated in accordance with departmental procedures.
Venue & Staging Operations:
- Assist in maintaining venue staging systems, equipment, infrastructure, and technical spaces to departmental standards.
- Support routine checks of installed staging equipment and venue infrastructure.
- Assist with staging installations, venue upgrades, equipment movements, and improvement projects.
- Assist with the safe movement, positioning, assembly, and dismantling of staging equipment and infrastructure.
- Maintain high standards of housekeeping throughout all staging and technical work areas.
Event & Production Support:
- Assist with the preparation, installation, operation, and removal of staging equipment for events, productions, exhibitions, performances, conferences, functions, and venue activities.
- Support venue changeovers, bump-ins, bump-outs, rehearsals, performances, and event delivery activities.
- Assist with the setup and operation of staging systems, including platforms, risers, decks, barriers, drapes, furniture, and associated equipment.
- Perform show crew and technical duties across HOTA venues and facilities as required.
- Assist Staging Seniors and the Head of Staging with event and production delivery requirements.
- Provide technical support to internal business units for meetings, functions, activations, exhibitions, conferences, presentations, and special events.
- Assist with the setup, operation, movement, and pack down of technical equipment across staging, lighting, audio, video, and venue operations where required.
- Support venue changeovers and ensure spaces are appropriately prepared for incoming events, productions, and activities.
- Contribute to maintaining venue readiness and ensuring a high standard of presentation for all events and activities.
What We’re Looking For
Essential:
- Demonstrated experience in staging, technical production, live events, theatre, entertainment, or a related environment.
- Sound practical knowledge of staging equipment, systems, and safe work practices.
- Experience with event bump-ins, bump-outs, setups, pack downs, changeovers, rehearsals, performances, and venue operations.
- Ability to safely handle, move, assemble, dismantle, and operate staging equipment and infrastructure.
- Strong understanding of workplace health and safety requirements, including safe manual handling and working at heights.
- Ability to work effectively as part of a technical team and follow direction from Senior Technicians and Technical Management.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with a professional and customer-focused approach when working with internal and external stakeholders.
- Ability to work in a fast-paced event environment, remain calm under pressure, and respond to changing operational requirements.
- Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.

- Demonstrated ability to work safely in a live event environment while managing competing priorities and deadlines.
- Ability to obtain and maintain a Blue Card (Working with Children Check) if required by the duties of the role.

- Entertainment Industry experience.
- Current EWP licence (or willingness to obtain).
- Current Working at Heights training.
- Current Open Driver’s Licence.
- Current General Construction Induction Card (White Card).
- Electrical Test & Tag competency (desirable).
- First Aid Certificate (desirable).
