The Department of Justice and Community Safety (the department) is seeking a Senior Policy Officer, to provide a critical role within Continuous Improvement, System Performance Branch, Custodial Operations.
About the Business Unit
Corrections Victoria is part of the Corrections and Justice Services group in the Department of Justice and Community Safety (department). Corrections Victoria operates Victoria's adult custodial corrections system. Its vision is for Safer Prisons, Safer People, Safer Communities. Corrections Victoria's mission is to create a safer, smarter system with a skilled and supported workforce, that enables people in our care to make better decisions.
The System Performance Branch in Custodial Operations comprises three teams, which are: Operational Assurance, Compliance and Reviews; Continuous Improvement; and Statewide Operational Support. The branch provides authoritative, strategic, operational and policy advice, and briefing papers on a range of correctional issues to senior correctional management and is responsible for a range of work primarily across prisons. Its responsibilities include state-wide oversight of A Safer Places to Work, a range of central functions, including operational policy development, review and amendment, convening and participating in state-wide managers' meetings, performance monitoring and reporting, incident reporting, responding to family violence information sharing requests, oversight of internal and external reviews and investigations, coordination of Corrections Victoria's responses to coronial matters and litigation, auditing, correspondence, prison outreach and implementation support and general advice to prisons and other departmental staff and internal and external stakeholders.
About the Role
The Senior Policy Officer reports to the Manager, Continuous Improvement and is responsible for reviewing, amending and developing prison operational policies. The Senior Policy Officer will need to assess requests to amend policy and prioritise based on risk and importance. This role needs to work on numerous policies simultaneously, provide authoritative and accurate policy information to senior prison management and respond to urgent changes for changes in a time-pressured environment. Working with prison staff to embed policy changes will also be required.
While the position is based at 121 Exhibition Street Melbourne, flexible work arrangements are available, and you will be required to travel to other locations based on business needs.
Some of your duties will include:
- Manage operational policy review, amendment, and development. This includes the preparation of human rights charter assessments and gender impact assessments.
- Manage ad hoc tasks and projects relating to the development and amendments of operational policy, such as convening state-wide activity to consider the implementation of legislative or operational changes.
- Prepare high level detailed briefings and/or reports on policy issues that may involve integrating complex information from a variety of sources with limited direction.

About you
To be successful in this role, you will have:
- Knowledge and understanding of Corrections Victoria's operations, policies and procedures is highly regarded, or similar regulated work environment.
- Extensive experience in the preparation of high-quality written material along with highly developed information analysis and conceptual thinking.
- Demonstrated ability to engage internal and external stakeholders effectively.
- Solid understanding of the Charter of Human Rights and Responsibilities.
Qualifications
- There are no mandatory qualifications for this role; however a tertiary qualification in a relevant discipline would be highly desirable.
