About the role:

Legal Services provides legal services and advice to support policing, courts, and the Victorian community. Legal Services is led by an Executive Director (who is also the organisation's General Counsel) and employs over 800 staff spread across four divisions - the Office of the Executive Director; the Specialist Legal and Litigation Division; the Courts & Prosecution Services Division; and the Legal Business Operations Division.
The Executive Advisor to the Director, SLLD is responsible for leading the Office of the Director in the provision of seamless, high-level legal, strategic and policy advice on complex and sensitive matters. Additionally, the role supports the Director and the Executive Leadership team of Legal Services in the coordination and development of projects and policies, and to represent the Director on steering groups, working groups, committees and forums. This includes serving as a crucial conduit between the Director, Branch leadership, office of the Executive Director Legal Services, and other key internal or external stakeholders.

Your duties will include:
- Professionally lead and manage the Office of the Director to provide seamless high-level legal and strategic support to the Director.
- Provide authoritative and timely legal, strategic and policy advice, evidence-based recommendations and innovative solutions to the Director, executive management and other stakeholders on complex and sensitive matters.
- Lead and undertake research, analysis and review of complex legal issues and develop evidence-based options and strategies to address them.
- Review and evaluate legislative and policy proposals in conjunction with SLLD Branch leadership and undertake discussions with internal and external stakeholders for the purpose of articulating the Divisional view on legislative change, policy and social issues.
- Oversee and support governance structures and processes relevant to the smooth and effective operation of the Office of the Director.
- Work with the Director to drive divisional priorities and to ensure and assist in the identification, assessment, and management of potential risks with initiative, skill, and discretion in a timely way.
- Develop and/or manage the development of briefs, reports, business plans, and other relevant documents on complex issues, demonstrating a high level of knowledge and providing expert analysis and quality control.
- Manage, undertake, coordinate and/or oversee a range of strategic projects and priorities on behalf of the Director, bringing together subject matter experts and stakeholders from across the division, department and organisation, as well as external stakeholders.
- Liaise, influence and negotiate with internal and external stakeholders to identify and resolve complex issues on behalf of, and on the instruction of, the Director and build and enhance relationships with stakeholders to collaborate on systemic reform and improvement initiatives.
As the successful applicant, you will have:
- A tertiary qualification in law or related discipline such as criminology or legal policy.
- Demonstrated experience providing strategic legal and/or legal policy advice.
- High level people skills, with experience communicating and collaborating effectively with senior leaders.
Requirements and relevant information:
- One (1) x full-time, ongoing position available.
- The salary range for a VPS6 role is $142,790 to $191,084 (covering salary ranges VPSG6.1 and VPSG6.2). Although it is standard practice for selected candidates to commence at the base of the salary range, genuine consideration will be given to a commencement salary within the available range that is commensurate with the successful candidate's knowledge, skills and experiences. This will be subject to negotiations with the Hiring Manager in the course of the selection process and may include the provision of evidence of a higher income and/or supporting documentation (as required).
- This position is located at Victoria Police Centre, 311 Spencer Street, Docklands.
- The successful applicant will be required to undergo National Security Vetting, achieve and maintain a security classification as determined by the Department Head. To achieve this, applicants must be an Australian Citizen.
- The successful applicant will be required to undergo pre-employment checks which may include fingerprint checks and misconduct screening.
- As a member of the Legal Services Department you will be located, on selection, at a specific office within a Division for a particular advertised opportunity. However, given occasional legal service demand issues you may be required at times to undertake varied work within the Department. This supports the Departments commitment to a flexible and deployable legal workforce and professional development opportunities in a range of legal domains.
