Paid Artillery Soldier Training – Australian Army

The Australian Army Artillery Soldier pathway is a full-time role for people who want a physically active, challenging and team-focused career using powerful weapon systems, battle management systems and advanced surveillance equipment.
No prior military experience is required. You will receive the training needed to become an Army Artillery Soldier and may be streamed into one of several specialist roles as you progress.
Pay and Benefits
You are paid while you train.
Starting salary:
$60,517 per annum
plus 16.4% superannuation
Once trained, salary increases to at least:
$86,453 per annum
plus 16.4% superannuation
This role may also attract additional allowances, including field allowance.

What Artillery Soldiers Do
As an Artillery Soldier, you will be part of the team that helps provide artillery fire, surveillance, target acquisition and air defence capability.
You may work with equipment and systems such as:
- M777 Howitzer
- National Advanced Surface to Air Missile System (NASAMS)
- Battlefield Management Systems
- Digital Terminal Control Systems
- Radar systems
- Advanced communications and targeting equipment
Specialist Role Streams
As you progress through training, you may be streamed into one of four specialist areas:
- Artillery Observer
- Artillery Operator / Gunner
- Artillery Command Systems Operator
- Air Defence Operator
Allocation to a specific stream is based on preference, performance and position availability.

Entry Requirements
Applicants generally need to:
- Be an Australian citizen or eligible Australian permanent resident
- Be at least 17 years old to enter the ADF
- Have completed Year 10 English and Maths
- Have a checkable background
- Be reasonably fit and healthy
- Have no suspended or cancelled driver’s licence, if they hold one
You can usually start your application from 16.5 years old.
