Primary objective
Provide strategic advice on mental health issues relating to Aboriginal people as well as provide professional leadership to
Aboriginal Mental Health Workers employed by Mental Health Services Central Australia Region.
Key duties and responsibilities
1. Provide the General Manager with strategic advice about issues relating to Mental Health care for Aboriginal clients,
and about organisational arrangements that best promote the development of appropriate services.
2. Provide leadership, support and mentoring for Aboriginal Mental Health staff and provide advice to Mental Health staff
on issues that impact on Aboriginal people.
3. Assist with recruitment, retention and ongoing education for Aboriginal Mental Health staff in collaboration with other
mental health staff i.e. Recruitment Coordinator, Safety and Quality team.
4. Work in collaboration with General Manager as well as professional staff to ensure a quality Mental Health service in
line with National Mental Health standards is provided.
5. Establish and maintain contact with a network of relevant stakeholders to facilitate the Mental Health program to
ensure the Mental Health service is delivered in a culturally appropriate and sensitive way.
6. Ensure Aboriginal Mental Health staff adhere to Departmental policies and procedures and participate in quality
improvement and accreditation processes.
7. Follow defined service quality standards, work health and safety policies and procedures relating to the work being
undertaken in order to ensure high quality, safe services and workplaces.
Selection criteria
Essential
1. Demonstrated experience working with or in the area of Aboriginal health.
2. Experience in working in a mental health setting.
3. Demonstrated experience working in partnership with community organisations.
4. Sound knowledge and experience of Aboriginal ways and local terms of reference, customs and issues relevant to
Mental Health.
5. Sound knowledge of National Mental Health Standards and National and State/Territory legislation, policies and
directions relevant to Aboriginal mental health service delivery.
6. Proven ability to represent Aboriginal Mental Health staff and the Aboriginal community interests at meetings and other
forums of consultation and discussion.
7. Well-developed communication skills both written and oral and the ability to work collaboratively with a range of
service providers and community members.
