Join Cawthron Institute and help bring our science to life through clear, engaging and purposeful communication. We’re looking for a Communications Advisor to join our team and create high-quality content that connects our science with a range of audiences. This role is all about making complex ideas easy to understand, strengthening our brand, and supporting our workforce to feel recognised for the legends they are.
It’s a varied, hands-on role suited to someone who enjoys storytelling, building relationships, and delivering content across multiple channels. If you’re naturally curious, have a sharp eye for detail, and enjoy working in a collaborative environment, this is a great opportunity to do meaningful work with real impact.
As a Communications Advisor, you’ll help plan, create and deliver content that showcases Cawthron’s research, people and impact.
- Work with scientists and teams to identify and develop stories about their research and the impact that has for communities and the environment.
- Write and edit content for web, newsletters, reports and social media.
- Create engaging digital content including video, photography and graphics.
- Turn complex scientific information into clear, accessible content.
- Support delivery of digital channels including website, intranet and social media.
- Keep web and intranet content accurate, relevant and up to date.
- Plan and schedule social media content and track engagement.
- Apply brand guidelines and support others to use them consistently.
- Contribute to publications, brochures and other communications materials.
- Support team planning, reporting and coordination activities.
- Assist with event planning and delivery when needed.

A relevant qualification in communications, marketing, public relations or similar, with around 2 to 4 years’ experience in a communications or related role.
- Experience creating content across digital and traditional channels, with confidence using tools such as website content systems and social media platforms.
- Strong writing, editing and storytelling skills, with the ability to tailor content for different audiences.
- A collaborative approach and the ability to build effective working relationships across teams.
- Curiosity and initiative, with confidence to ask questions and seek out stories.
- Strong attention to detail and a commitment to producing high-quality work.
- Good organisational skills, with the ability to manage multiple priorities and deadlines and adapt in a fast-paced environment.
