The Byron Bay Chamber of Commerce is an active, purpose-driven organisation representing a diverse community of businesses across the Byron Shire. Our mission is to champion local business by fostering connection, promoting growth, and driving advocacy on issues that impact our members.
We deliver events, facilitate collaboration, and amplify the voice of our business community in local and regional decision-making.
Executive Officer Position Description:
Role Purpose
The Executive Officer (EO) is responsible for supporting the day-to-day operations of the Chamber, delivering programs and events, managing communications and member engagement, and supporting the organisation’s strategic objectives.
As the face of the Chamber, the EO works closely with the President, Chamber Board, member businesses and key stakeholders to deliver value to the business community and support the ongoing growth and impact of the organisation.
Key Responsibilities
Events & Programs
- Plan and deliver a calendar of events, including business networking events, panel discussions, the Uniquely Byron Business Awards and community initiatives.
- Coordinate event logistics including sponsorship, venues, speakers, ticketing and promotion.
- Oversee post-event reporting and stakeholder feedback processes.
Communications & Marketing
- Develop and implement marketing and communications activities to enhance Chamber visibility.
- Draft and distribute press releases regarding Chamber activities.
- Create and distribute member EDMs, social media content and website updates.
- Create marketing collateral such as social media tiles, banners and other relevant materials to support Chamber initiatives and events.
- Maintain brand consistency and ensure messaging reflects the Chamber’s values and vision.
Operations
- Support the day-to-day operations of the Chamber and ensure alignment with strategic objectives of Connection, Advocacy and Promotion.
- Support the Executive Committee in implementing initiatives, including agendas, minutes and action tracking.
- Manage budgets and financial reporting in collaboration with the Treasurer.
- Coordinate contractors, interns or volunteers as required.
Membership, Partner & Community Engagement
- Manage member relations including onboarding, renewals and responding to member enquiries.
- Maintain and update the membership database (Joinit CRM System).
- Foster strong relationships with local businesses, community organisations and government bodies.
- Support membership growth and retention activities.
- Identify, support and maintain annual partnership and event sponsorship opportunities.
Advocacy & Representation
- Support the Chamber’s advocacy efforts by collecting member insights, preparing submissions and attending stakeholder meetings.
- Represent the Chamber at relevant forums, roundtables and community engagements.
- Track and communicate issues affecting local businesses, including council policy, development, tourism and infrastructure.
- Draft letters of support on behalf of the Chamber for local businesses, Council and other stakeholders.
Key Selection Criteria
Essential
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to build relationships across business and community sectors.
- Strong organisational skills and the ability to coordinate projects, events and communications.
- Strong written communication skills and confidence creating digital content, including social media.
- Ability to work independently, manage priorities and take initiative.
- Passion for community-building and supporting local business.
Desirable
- Knowledge of the Byron Shire business environment and local issues.
- Experience in digital marketing, social media, content creation or communications.
- Demonstrated digital competency, with familiarity in relevant software and applications.
- Experience in grant writing or funding applications.
- Understanding of governance and compliance within not-for-profit organisations.

Software/Application Knowledge
The ideal candidate will be comfortable using a range of digital tools to support day-to-day operations, communications and member engagement. Familiarity with the following platforms is desirable but not essential:
- CRM/Member Management: Joinit
- Email Marketing: Flodesk
- Website Management: WordPress, Divi Builder
- Graphic Design & Content: Canva, Adobe Express
- Social Media: Instagram, Facebook (Meta Business Suite), LinkedIn
- Event Management: Humanitix
- Productivity Tools: Google Workspace, Microsoft 365, ChatGPT
- Accounting & Reporting: Stripe, Xero (basic familiarity)
Working Conditions
- Flexible, part-time hours with some after-hours event attendance required (approximately 12–16 hours per week).
- Hybrid work model (remote with local presence for events and key meetings).
