Seven West Media is looking for a Deputy Sports Editor to help lead The West Australian, The Sunday Times and The Nightly’s sports sections across print, digital and audiovisual media, creating impactful, accurate, engaging and insightful content across a range of sports.
Reporting directly to the Sports Editor, you will work with a highly experienced team to develop our award-winning coverage and supercharge our newsbreaking capabilities.
Operating in a fast-paced news environment, you will help with the day-to-day design and editorial direction of the sports section in print and online. You will also work closely with and guide our team of sports journalists in producing exclusive stories, features, analysis, podcasts and videos.
About the role:
- Work with the Sports Editor to curate our sport coverage across both print and digital.
- Help manage the teams responsible for that coverage and assist in rostering.
- Work with the Sports Editor and reporters to ensure we are providing our readers with the compelling, comprehensive and up-to-the-minute sport news they crave.
- Help design and execute the sport sections of The West, The Sunday Times and The Nightly – as well as our Pre Game and The Game football liftouts – including producing eye-catching and entertaining covers.
- Cultivate and maintain relationships with sport staff, as well as key contacts in the industry, exercise strong editorial judgment and oversee complex story development from concept to publication.
- The ability to balance multiple priorities, deadlines and platforms, with flexibility to work evenings and weekends on a flexible roster.
About you:
- Intimate knowledge of all mainstream sporting codes and a solid understanding of the business of sport.
- Substantial journalism experience, including reporting on sport.
- A strong knowledge of digital audiences.
- The ability to work under pressure.
- Strong written and communication skills.
- An eye for detail, a head for news and a hunger for a good yarn.
