Sedgman Onyx delivers innovative project solutions for Australia’s resources and infrastructure sectors, providing practical, cost-effective and adaptable engineering expertise for complex project challenges. As part of Sedgman and the broader CIMIC Group, we combine specialist capability with the strength of a global resources and infrastructure business.
As we continue to grow, our team is supporting major resources, infrastructure and critical minerals projects across Australia, delivering sustainable, technically robust solutions that help shape the future of project delivery.
To support this growth, we’re looking for a Lead Piping & Water Engineer to join Sedgman Onyx and play a key role in advancing engineering excellence across our project portfolio.
In this role, you will lead and coordinate piping systems engineering and design across non-process water infrastructure, mineral processing projects and related facilities. You will provide technical direction to mechanical piping engineering and design teams, ensuring safe, technically rigorous and high-quality outcomes.
You will help resolve complex technical issues, strengthen design processes and support project outcomes that meet client and industry expectations.
The successful candidate will bring a strong hydraulic engineering foundation, WaterGEMS expertise and practical design experience across major water infrastructure and mineral processing projects.
What you’ll be doing
- Provide mechanical piping engineering leadership across multiple projects, driving quality, timely delivery, innovation, technical integrity, risk management, standards and safety.
- Plan workloads and provide technical and administrative direction to project personnel.
- Coordinate with other engineering disciplines to ensure integrated project delivery.
- Monitor and review the work of mechanical piping engineers, designers and drafting personnel to ensure technical competence, quality and performance requirements are met.
- Ensure all design documentation meets project and client requirements.
- Resolve complex design challenges and engage with engineering management on policy, technical or resourcing issues as required.
- Review, update and maintain standard drawings and Sedgman Onyx’s engineering specifications to align with industry best practice.
Provide effective leadership, coaching and mentoring to support and develop the team.

What you’ll bring
- Bachelor of Engineering (Mechanical)
- Minimum 15 years’ experience in a design, consultancy or operational engineering role.
- Strong technical understanding of process and piping design, including non-process water network systems such as mine dewatering, abstracted water conveyance and potable water systems.
- Experience applying piping design and layout expertise within mining and mineral processing environments.
- Proficiency with hydraulic water modelling packages, ideally WaterGEMS or, at minimum, EPANET.
- Experience with Newtonian, non-Newtonian, gas or fluid modelling packages such as FluidFlow.
- Proven experience leading and managing technical/project teams.
- Sound understanding of project management principles and controls.
- Demonstrated experience in a senior technical leadership role.
Ability to identify and resolve technical issues or escalate as required.
