The Role:
The Course Coordinator for the Melbourne Institute of Technology’s (MIT) Master of Social Work
(Qualifying) (MSW) is responsible for the academic integrity, curriculum quality, and student experience of
the degree program. They ensure compliance with accreditation standards (such as the AASW), manage
academic staff, and oversee field education requirements.

The Course Coordinator leads the strategic direction and operational management of the Master of Social
Work program. This role ensures the curriculum is contemporary, evidence-based and aligned with human
rights, social justice frameworks and industry standards. The Coordinator also acts as the primary liaison
between MIT, professional bodies and the community services sector to enhance the employability and
readiness of our graduates.

The appointment would be at a minimum Level C, based on qualifications and experience.

Responsibilities:
1. Academic Leadership & Curriculum Management

Maintain the academic integrity and continuous improvement of the MSW Program.
Oversee course design, unit outlines and assessment strategies to ensure compliance
Ensure the program meets the Australian Social Work Education and Accreditation Standards

(ASWEAS) governed by the Australian Association of Social Work (AASW).

Integrate contemporary fields of practice (e.g., mental health, child and family, Indigenous well-

being) into course delivery.

2. Student Experience & Support

Provide academic advising and pastoral support to MSW students, including managing academic

adjustment plans and progression.

Monitor student retention, progression, and overall satisfaction, implementing interventions when

necessary.

3. Work Placement Coordination

Partner with the MIT Work Placement team to ensure the quality and viability of the required

professional placements.

Support students undergoing placements through reflective practice and oversight of liaison

officers.

4. Industry Engagement & Strategic Partnerships
• Build and maintain strong relationships with key stakeholders across the health and community

services sectors to secure placement and employment opportunities.

Advocate for the social work profession and represent the university on relevant external

committees and working groups.

5. Staff Supervision & Administration
• Recruit suitably qualified academic staff to deliver the program.

Coordinate, mentor, and lead teaching staff, sessional academics and guest lecturers.
Oversee administrative processes related to timetabling, subject enrolments, results and census

dates.

SELECTION CRITERIA

Mandatory - A minimum of five (5) years of teaching experience at the tertiary level.
Qualifications:

Ph.D. or equivalent higher degree in Social Work, Human Services, or a closely related discipline
and a Graduate Certificate in Learning and Teaching is desirable.

Professional Standing:

Eligibility for membership with the Australian Association of Social Workers (AASW) is mandatory.

Academic Experience:

Demonstrated experience in tertiary teaching, curriculum development, and course coordination,
preferably within postgraduate social work programs.

Industry Experience:

Substantial professional experience in the social work or human services sector.

Leadership Skills:
Proven ability to lead and mentor academic teams, manage resources and resolve complex

problems in an autonomous environment.

Communication:

Exceptional interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to build effective networks
with community stakeholders and diverse student cohorts.
