## Position Overview
We are looking for a skilled and dedicated Farrier to join our team and provide expert hoof care and horseshoeing services across our operations. The ideal candidate will bring a strong foundation in equine hoof health, metalwork, and animal handling, combined with a genuine passion for equine welfare. This role suits a qualified tradesperson who works methodically, exercises sound judgement, and thrives in a hands-on, outdoor environment. A commitment to ongoing professional development and a high standard of workmanship are essential to succeed in this position.
## Key Responsibilities
- Assess and inspect horses' hooves regularly to evaluate condition, identify abnormalities, and determine appropriate shoeing or trimming requirements
- Select suitable metal stock based on job specifications, taking into account the horse's breed, size, workload, and any corrective needs
- Heat metal in forges and furnaces, then shape and form horseshoes using hand tools, hammers, punches, and machine presses to achieve the correct fit
- Apply tempering and hardening techniques to finished shoes by quenching in oil or water baths, or by allowing gradual air cooling, to ensure durability and performance
- Prepare hooves for shoeing by cleaning, trimming excess growth, and balancing the hoof wall to promote healthy posture and movement
- Fit and nail horseshoes securely to hooves, ensuring correct alignment and finish to prevent discomfort or injury to the horse
- Provide corrective and therapeutic shoeing for horses with musculoskeletal conditions, lameness, or hoof abnormalities, in consultation with veterinarians where required
- Maintain and sharpen hand tools and equipment, ensuring all forging and fitting instruments are in safe working order
- Liaise with horse owners, trainers, and stable managers to communicate findings, recommend shoeing schedules, and provide guidance on hoof care between visits
- Maintain accurate client and service records, including shoeing histories, materials used, and any identified health concerns
- Adhere to workplace health and safety standards and animal welfare requirements at all times whilst on site
- Manage own workload and travel schedule efficiently, ensuring timely attendance at client properties and the ability to respond to urgent requirements
## Required Qualifications & Skills
- Completion of a recognised farriery apprenticeship or formal trade qualification in farriery
- Registration or eligibility for registration with the relevant state or territory farriery authority or equine industry body where applicable
- Demonstrated hands-on experience in both hot and cold shoeing techniques across a variety of horse breeds and disciplines
- Proficiency in forge work, including heating, shaping, tempering, and finishing metal to the required specification
- Strong understanding of equine anatomy, biomechanics, and hoof physiology as it relates to shoeing and trimming practice
- Ability to handle horses calmly and safely, including those that are nervous, young, or difficult to manage
- Solid knowledge of corrective and remedial shoeing practices and the ability to work collaboratively with veterinary professionals
- Physical fitness and the ability to sustain demanding manual labour in variable outdoor conditions
- Sound organisational skills with the ability to self-manage appointments, travel, and client communication effectively
- Current driver's licence and reliable access to a vehicle suitable for transporting tools and equipment
## Preferred Qualifications
- Membership with a professional farriery association such as the Australian Farriers and Blacksmiths Association (AFBA) or equivalent body
- Additional training or certification in equine podiatry or remedial/therapeutic farriery
- Experience working with performance, racehorses, or competition horses across disciplines such as dressage, eventing, or racing
- First aid certificate, including equine or rural first aid where available
- Familiarity with modern hoof care technologies including glue-on shoes, composite materials, or hoof scanning tools
- Existing established client base or demonstrated experience operating as a self-employed farrier
