Position summary
The Motor Mechanic is responsible for diagnosing, repairing and maintaining Backpacker Cars
Sydney's fleet of rental vehicles, including passenger vehicles, vans and campervans. The role ensures
vehicles are safe, reliable, roadworthy and available for customer use through scheduled servicing,
inspections, diagnostic work and mechanical repairs performed in accordance with manufacturer
specifications, safety requirements and company procedures.
Key responsibilities
Identify and diagnose mechanical and electrical faults in engines, transmissions, steering,
suspension, braking, cooling and related vehicle systems.
Dismantle and remove engine parts, transmissions, steering components and other mechanical
assemblies for inspection, repair or replacement.
Repair or replace worn, defective or damaged parts and reassemble vehicle components in
accordance with service manuals and manufacturer specifications.
Perform scheduled servicing and routine maintenance, including oil and filter changes, lubrication,
tune-ups, brake inspections, fluid checks, battery checks and other preventative maintenance.
Test and adjust mechanical components after repairs to confirm correct operation, performance and safety.
Use diagnostic computers, testing equipment and workshop tools to identify and troubleshoot faults accurately.
Inspect vehicles and identify repairs required to maintain roadworthiness, safety and emissions compliance.
Maintain accurate service records, job cards, parts usage and repair notes for each vehicle.
Respond to vehicle breakdowns and provide roadside or workshop assistance where required.
Assist with preparing vehicles for hire and coordinate repair priorities with branch operations to minimise fleet downtime.
Follow workplace health and safety procedures and maintain a clean, safe and organised
workshop environment.
Essential skills and attributes
Strong ability to diagnose and repair mechanical and electrical faults across light vehicles, vans and campervans.
Sound knowledge of current vehicle technologies, diagnostic equipment and workshop procedures.
Ability to use tools and equipment safely, accurately and efficiently.
Strong organisational skills and the ability to complete work within required timeframes.
Good communication skills and the ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a team.
Ability to work under pressure and respond appropriately to urgent repairs and breakdowns.
High attention to detail and a strong commitment to vehicle safety and quality workmanship.
Qualifications and experience
Certificate III in Light Vehicle Mechanical Technology or at least three years of relevant experience in motor vehicle servicing, diagnostics and mechanical repairs.
Experience working with vans, campervans or light commercial vehicles is highly regarded.
A current driver licence is required.
