The Opportunity
We are seeking Senior Legal Officers to undertake legal and policy analysis and report drafting, stakeholder engagement, project management and leadership. The successful candidates will be exceptional legal thinkers and drafters, problem-solvers, collaborative team players and display an ability to manage and organise their work in the context of tight timeframes. Senior Legal Officers support the Commission by assisting in the development of reform proposals, drafting reports and recommendations, and by working collaboratively with their colleagues to ensure the ALRC’s law reform processes and activities are delivered in accordance with best practice.
Senior Legal Officers are integral to ALRC inquiries and report to the Principal Legal Officer responsible for leading the inquiry. Principal Legal Officers in turn, report to the ALRC’s Executive Director. The ALRC is led by the President, Justice Bromberg.

Key responsibilities of the positions:
Support the President, Commissioners, Executive Director, and Principal Legal Officers by:

Conducting Inquiries
- researching and identifying the key issues involved in the field of inquiry;
-
independently drafting, reviewing, and contributing to chapters for consultation documents and final reports;
-
using analytical and conceptual skills to formulate, draft and evaluate proposals and recommendations for reform;
-
identifying and communicating with stakeholders of particular interest for the inquiry;
-
participating in consultation meetings;
-
undertaking high level analysis of complex issues and inquiry submissions;
-
attending ALRC Advisory Committee and other inquiry related meetings; and
- performing inquiry administrative tasks to a high standard as required
- Support and mentor legal staff and interns
- contribute to the cohesion and effectiveness of the inquiry team by sharing experience and knowledge;

foster collegiate and nurturing relationships within the legal team; and
-
supervise and mentor legal officers and interns as required and participate in intern recruitment processes.
- Contributing to the strategic development of the ALRC
- participate in cross organisational activities; and
-
support the ongoing development of the ALRC’s website and communications functions, as required.
Selection Criteria:
- Three or more years’ experience in the areas of legal practice, legal research or legal policy development.

High level research and drafting skills with an ability to deliver strategic and engaging pieces of work both independently and under supervision.

Demonstrated experience researching and drafting clear and concise legal and or policy documents that succinctly articulate complex legal ideas and concepts.

High level analytical and conceptual skills in relation to legal policy development.

Demonstrated capacity to foster productive working relationships, work in a diverse team, share information and ideas, and consider the views of others.

Ability to work independently, to prioritise tasks and to set schedules in order to meet specified deadlines.
