The Assistant Nurse has a key role to play in supporting the Campus Nurse, staff and students with all physical, psychological and emotional related health conditions and emergencies. The role will also include the promotion of health education, the development of positive healthy attitudes and the maintenance of an environment conducive to optimal health and growth.
The Assistant Nurse will actively promote and uphold the ethos and values of the school and will demonstrate a clear understanding of and commitment to the overall achievement and well-being of all students.
This role will be supporting the Gippsland programme in Melbourne, Australia on casual basis.
1. General health and first aid
- Provide first aid, assessment and health care to students and staff as needed.
- Deliver health information and implement strategies to assist students and staff in the participation of campus life.
- Provide a high degree of emergency nursing care to the campus community.
- Contact and refer to other medical professionals where needed e.g. doctor, dentist, specialists or allied health.
- Identify and assess the needs of students in health matters and take the necessary steps to ensure those needs are met.
- Liaise with parents/guardians where necessary to gain consent for treatment and to provide timely updates.
- Assist in preventing accidents and illness within campus community by addressing health and safety issues.
2. Medical Records
- Liaise with the Campus Nurse to receive and review all medical files of students and staff attending the Gippsland Campus.
- Provide the Tanglin Gippsland staff with relevant information related to students and staff health conditions or episodes.
- Keep student medical records up to date, confidential and accurately recorded.
- Manage and update management plans for students with medical needs e.g. diabetes, seizures, food allergies, asthma, etc. recording updated plans digitally on file and in notices for staff awareness.
- Monitor for upcoming events, and prepare a summary of students with medical conditions for staff taking students on field trips or offsite activities prior to departure.
- Complete incident reports where necessary for students and staff and examine individual situation to see if incident may have been preventable. Organise correction of area/situation so as incident may not occur again to that or another person.
3. Reports
- Liaison with Head of Pastoral Care and Head of Leaarning as to the physical/emotional needs of specific students.
- Address specific illnessess with policy and implement procedure changes addressing medical concerns as needed.
- Advise staff of any concerns for students with social or emotional concerns.
4. Periodic Programs
- Maintain currency of student management plans relating to serious medical conditions e.g. anaphylaxis, diabetes, etc.
- Ensure that the campus remains compliant with all health-related government regulations.
- Attend events offsite and set up first aid area for students and administer first aid as needed.
5. Education
- Provide ongoing education and updates for staff as to policies and procedures.
- Educate staff members where necessary on relevant care for specific illnesses e.g. anaphylaxis, allergy and the administration of an autoinjector.
- Run or organise mandatory biannual anaphylaxis/Asthma refresher and include students with serious medical conditions per Ministerial Order 706.
6. Medical Supplies
- Ensure that emergency medical/first aid equipment in the Health Centre and across the campus are current, safe and functional.
- Monitoring ordering and restocking of all medical supplies for first aid kits around the campus and first aid kits taken on excursions, camps and sporting activities.
- Prepare first aid kits for staff to take on all offsite trips.
- Write field trip risk minimisation plans for students with anaphylaxis and asthma, liaising with their parents, campus kitchen staff and Tanglin staff attending, in a timely manner prior to the trip.
- Ensure timely and properly recorded notes are made for medical treatments or concerns for students and staff.
7. Health and Safety
All staff are expected to:
- Adhere to and implement all safe work practices and procedures in accordance with relevant Tanglin policies.
- Work safely and report any hazards in accordance with campus procedures.
- Monitor and take full care of the health and safety of others within area of responsibility.
- Participate when required in the resolution of safety issues.
8. Pastoral Care
- All residential staff members play a vital role in supervising, mentoring, leading and providing pastoral care for students.
- Establish a rapport with students while maintaining a professional working relationship.
- Be committed to safeguarding and to promoting the welfare of young people.
- Supervising and setting high expectations of standards among the students in the dorms and common room, overseeing their daily lives and encouraging high levels of effort and attainment.
- Implementing the campus' behaviour policy effectively to maintain discipline within the dormitory and common room and creating an environment where all forms of bullying and anti-social behaviour are regarded as unacceptable.
Essential Criteria:
- Registered Nurse Division 1 Current registration with Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency [AHPRA]
- Current Working With Children Check
- Current National Criminal Police Check
Desirable Criteria:
- Experience in a similar role / educational institution
- Certificate IV in Workplace Training and Assessment is desirable but not essential
- Experience with Learning Management Systems
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills with children and adults
- A warm and friendly disposition, with a calm, tactful and diplomatic approach
- A strong interest in working with teenagers
- Proven ability to be discreet and maintain confidentiality
- Self-motivated and able to work autonomously and proactively
- Highly organised and resourceful
- Excellent skills of time management, organisation and ability to multi-task and prioritise under pressure
- Positive and flexible attitude
- Attention to detail
- High standard of personal presentation
- Intermediate computer literacy (Word, Outlook, Excel and Internet) and database experience
