About Newmont
Newmont produces metals the world needs - safely, responsibly and with care for people, communities and the environment. With a 100+ year history, we continue to shape the future of mining through innovation and strong operational performance. By joining our inclusive, world-class team, you can help shape the future of mining and make a meaningful difference.
Your work environment
Newmont has fully owned and operated the Tanami mine since 2002. The mine operates in the remote Tanami Desert of Australia. The mine and plant are located on Aboriginal freehold land that is owned by the Warlpiri people and managed on their behalf by the Central Desert Aboriginal Lands Trust. Tanami is a fly-in-fly-out operation in one of Australia’s most remote locations. Tanami is 270 km from its closest neighbours, the remote Aboriginal community of Yuendumu.
Your role
Reporting to the Superintendent, Geotechnical and Backfill, in the position of Geotechnical Engineer you will deliver geotechnical engineering support for underground mining operations and ensure compliance with site ground control standards and geotechnical design requirements across the mine Tanami operation.
Other key responsibilities will be to:
-
Undertake geotechnical inspections, mapping, monitoring and data collection to assess ground conditions, excavation performance and geotechnical risk
-
Develop, review and approve geotechnical designs including stopes, development excavations, pillars, ground support and backfill systems
-
Apply rock mechanic principles, numerical modelling and empirical design methods to optimise mine design and excavation stability
-
Interpret geotechnical, monitoring and seismic data to evaluate rock mass behaviour and support operational decision-making
-
Conduct geotechnical risk assessments and recommend appropriate controls to manage ground-related hazards
-
Monitor stope and excavation performance and undertake reconciliation and back-analysis to drive continuous improvement in design practices
-
Investigate geotechnical incidents including rockfalls, seismic events and ground support performance, and provide technical recommendations
-
Maintain geotechnical databases, monitoring systems and technical reporting to support operational and strategic planning
-
Collaborate with Mining, Planning and Technical Services teams to ensure geotechnical considerations are effectively integrated into mine plans and production activities.
This permanent position will be based on-site at the Tanami mine located in the remote Northern Territory working on a fly in fly out roster of 8 days on/6 days off from Perth, Darwin, Brisbane or Alice Springs. Mine village accommodation will be provided.
