About the Role
As an Urban Planner, you will be part of a collaborative team delivering responsive, customer-focused, and high-quality development planning services that help shape the future of the city. In this role, you will assess and determine planning applications, provide professional planning advice to internal and external stakeholders, and ensure compliance with relevant planning legislation, policies, and procedures. You will engage with applicants, consultants, residents, and colleagues to facilitate positive planning outcomes and support sustainable urban development.
Reporting to the Manager Statutory Planning, you will work closely with fellow Urban Planners and be supported by experienced Senior and Principal Urban Planners. You will thrive in a team environment, demonstrate strong analytical and communication skills, and be committed to delivering high-quality planning services that meet the needs of a growing city.
A Little More About the Role
- Assess and determine a diverse range of planning applications, ensuring compliance with the Planning and Environment Act, Melbourne Planning Scheme, and relevant legislation.
- Provide expert planning advice and high-quality customer service to applicants, stakeholders, government authorities, and the broader community.
- Prepare detailed planning reports, recommendations, and appeal submissions, and represent Council at VCAT and other external forums when required.
- Collaborate with internal and external stakeholders to deliver positive land use and development outcomes across the municipality.
- Contribute to continuous improvement initiatives, driving best-practice planning processes and service excellence within the team.

What You Will Bring to the Role
All CoM employees will demonstrate an ability to articulate and demonstrate benefits of positive culture and values. In addition, the position will require:
- Qualifications and/or tertiary degree in Planning and / or eligibility for graduate membership of PIA
- Experience in a planning office and good knowledge of the Planning and Environment Act and planning processes.
- Well-developed written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to prepare comprehensive reports and recommendations, effectively negotiate, mediate, and resolve conflicts with a range of stakeholders.
- High level organisational skills and the ability to work in a semi-autonomous environment
- Strong analytical and interpretive skills, with the ability to assess complex planning issues, develop informed recommendations, and effectively represent Council at public forums and stakeholder meetings.
