Hornsby Ku-ring-gai Hospital is a major metropolitan teaching hospital. Patients can access a range of services including coronary care, intensive care, orthopaedics, general medicine, surgical, obstetric, respiratory, rehabilitation, paediatric, maternity and emergency care. The hospital also provides a wide range of outpatient services including allied health, dental and podiatry clinics, child, adolescent and family health, drug and alcohol, health promotion and rehabilitation and aged care. An acute mental health service is co-located at Hornsby Hospital. The new $265 million Stage 2 redevelopment was officially opened in June 2022.

What you'll be doing
The primary role of a Paediatric Advanced Trainee is provision of care for patients and families in both inpatient and outpatient settings, at a level of skill and autonomy consistent with Advanced Training in Paediatrics. The role includes initial assessment of children, rational use of investigations, ongoing management and monitoring progress, and organising timely discharge and appropriate follow up.
The Paediatric Advanced Trainee is a senior member of the Junior Medical Staff within a clinical team. In matters relating directly to patient care, the Trainee is responsible to the Specialist in charge of the patient's care and the Fellow(s) where relevant. The Trainee is responsible for supervision and teaching of Junior Medical Staff on their clinical team, including medical students. The Paediatric Advanced Trainee is a role model for Junior Medical Staff in relation to professional conduct, clinical acumen and communication with patients, families and colleagues (including health professionals and other staff working in hospital and outpatient settings).
All trainees will have the following opportunities during their time in the HKH Paediatric Department:
Experience working in a metropolitan level 4 Paediatric Unit and level 3 Special Care Unit in both an inpatient and outpatient setting.
Build on the clinical knowledge and skills gained during Basic Training to develop the professional qualities, attitudes and behaviours to become a competent Physician.
Perform interventions under supervision appropriate for level of training.
Have opportunities to practice in a more autonomous fashion than as a basic trainee – with their own clinic patients and clinic days), first on call experience and some management responsibility for more junior JMOs in the team where appropriate and with senior support).
Participate in the Paediatric trainee roster outside clinic times.
Advanced Trainees will be required to work normal hours, as appropriate for the clinical service; this will include shift work.Trainees will also be required to work reasonable rostered overtime hours as required by the clinical service; this includes being available for patient handover and on-call duties in accordance with Public Health Medical Officers (State) Award.
