Aboriginal Family Group Convenor (New Position)
2x Part-time positions, 7.6 hours a week – Fixed Term to 30 June 2027
This is an Aboriginal Designated Position, classified under 'special measures' of Section 12 of the Equal Opportunity Act 2010. Only Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people are eligible to apply.
About the Role
The Aboriginal Family Group Convenor role will support Aboriginal families to lead a culturally strong, family driven decision making that strengthens children’s safety, wellbeing and connection to culture. The role facilitates inclusive and culturally safe family group conferencing processes that empower families to identify their own solutions, develop practical plans, and build stability and healthy child development, with the aim of diverting families from statutory child protection involvement where possible.
The role prepares and supports families to meaningfully participate in the conferencing process by addressing barriers to engagement, coordinating participation, and ensuring families are well informed and confident. As an independent facilitator, the role leads family led meetings, including mandatory private family time, ensuring the integrity of the process andthat the voice of the family remains central. The role also supports the implementation and review of family plans and contributes to building the capability of the ACCO workforce to identify families suitable for Aboriginal Family Group Conferencing and to embed family led, culturally grounded practice across services.
About You
To excel in this position, you should possess the following qualifications and qualities:
Qualifications and Registrations:
- Diploma in Community Services or similar in one of the following (or willingness to work towards):
Knowledge and skills:
- Lived experience, cultural knowledge, and community authority are recognised and valued alongside formal qualifications in line with Aboriginal community-controlled practice.
- Strong understanding of Aboriginal culture and kinship , and the importance for families to lead decisions about their children to support safety, wellbeing, stability, and connection to culture.
- Experience or ability in supporting and running family led meetings or conferences with Aboriginal families, ensuring families have private time to talk and that their voices, decisions, and authority remain central throughout the process.
- Ability to prepare families for meetings and conferences byexplaining the process clearly, helping remove barriers to participation, coordinating who attends, and creating a safe, inclusive, and culturally respectful environment.
- Skills in supporting families to create practical, strengths-based family plans , and helping put these plans into action and review them over time to support children’s safety, stability, and healthy development.
- Good understanding of child safety and wellbeing , including the importance of early support, family-led planning, and helping families get the right help early to avoid statutory child protection involvement when possible.
- Strong communication and facilitation skills , including the ability to manage assertive group discussions, handle conflict respectfully.
- Ensure culturally safe spaces are in place and involve a wide range of family members and service partners.
- Ability to work well within an Aboriginal Community Controlled Organisation (ACCO) and to support staff to recognise families who may benefit from Aboriginal Family Group Conferencing and to strengthen family led practice across services.
