Macquarie University's Property Division is looking for an accomplished architect to lead the Planning Team and also be the Design Manager for all Campus projects in the role of Head of Design and Planning. In this pivotal role, you will provide strategic oversight of architectural design, planning and scoping services across our entire minor and capital works pipeline, helping to build the physical environment where great ideas and discoveries take shape.
Sitting within the Strategy and Planning Team, you will guide the Design and Planning functions, integrate planning and design outcomes, and partner closely with the Director, Strategy and Planning to advance our property and campus development objectives. With influence across an average of 60 projects per year and a $450M University project portfolio, this is a rare opportunity to leave a lasting mark on one of Australia's most dynamic university campuses.
About the Role
Reporting to the Director, Strategy and Planning, you will lead the design and space planning agenda across the University's assets, both owned and leased, on and off campus. You will manage the Space Management and Planning teams while personally delivering high-quality design services across the capital works program. Key responsibilities include:

Overseeing the pipeline of the capital management program for all design-related capital works, aligned with University objectives.

Delivering architectural and interior design services across all University assets, reflecting best practice.

Critically evaluating and advising on project design and specifications against agreed scope, business needs and statutory compliance requirements.

Analysing and recommending changes to the physical campus and the allocation and use of space to inform space management planning.

Developing, implementing and embedding governance, prioritisation and performance frameworks across the planning teams.

Overseeing project design, scope and deliverables with stakeholders and external providers, and managing the selection and procurement of design consultants, suppliers and contractors.

Preparing strategic reporting, briefs and business cases in partnership with the Director, Strategy and Planning.

Building and guiding an engaged, high-performing team and helping cultivate a culture of accountability, collaboration and continuous improvement across the Space and Planning teams.

About You (Selection Criteria)
You are a highly accomplished architect and design leader who brings strategic vision, technical excellence and genuine care for the people and communities your work serves. You combine deep design expertise with the relationship skills to engage senior stakeholders and guide multidisciplinary teams toward successful project outcomes.

Degree qualification in Architecture, supported by a minimum of 15 years' experience delivering complex architectural and high-profile design projects within commercial or comparable environments.

Proven experience guiding, developing and managing high-performing professional teams to achieve strategic and operational objectives.

Well-developed negotiation, influencing and stakeholder engagement skills, with experience across all aspects of project design, scope, delivery and outcomes within a complex matrix structure.

Demonstrated ability to provide expert design advice and to develop strategies that support project feasibility, planning, design excellence and industry best practice.

Proven ability to manage risk, resolve complex issues and guide multidisciplinary teams to successful outcomes, with well-developed analytical and conceptual problem-solving skills.

Advanced expertise in CAD and REVIT software, along with proficiency in the Microsoft Office Suite, including Excel and PowerPoint.

Demonstrated knowledge of Australian Building Codes, standards and statutory compliance requirements relevant to building design and construction, supported by excellent written, verbal and presentation communication skills.
