Aligned with the ACCC Strategy, the Consumer Product Safety Division’s strategic objective is to ‘Protect Australians from harmful products and practices’. We aim to achieve this through strong enforcement, active monitoring, educating businesses, informing consumers and taking timely intervention.
We use an intelligence-led and strategic approach to assess current and emerging consumer product safety risks and, where warranted, take action. We apply our Product Safety Priorities, and the broader ACCC Compliance and Enforcement Policy, to prioritise and address consumer product safety risks.
The advertised positions are in the Risk Management and Policy Branch (Standards Reform team, E-micromobility team and our Governance and Coordination team). The merit list from this recruitment may also be used to fill ongoing and non-ongoing positions across the Consumer Product Safety Division and broader ACCC.
As a Senior Compliance Officer at the APS6 level in the Standards Reform Team or the E-micromobility Devices Team, your work will involve supporting managers to deliver the following activities:
- Regulatory interventions – making recommendations to the Minister for regulatory action, including to issue or substantially update a product safety standard.
- Project management – designing, executing and evaluating initiatives within budgets and timeframes aimed at addressing a product safety hazard or internal business need.
- Research – undertaking research, analysis and consultation to prepare reports and recommendations that inform risk mitigation strategies to address product safety hazards
- Stakeholder engagement– working collaboratively with stakeholders across a diverse range of stakeholder groups (including consumer and health advocates, industry associations, legal experts, academia and government) to address product safety issues.
As a Senior Governance Officer at the APS6 level in the Governance and Coordination Team, your work will involve supporting managers to deliver the following activities:
- Corporate management, governance and support – corporate planning and reporting, briefs, budget management, executive and business support, divisional communications, and secretariat services for key internal and external committees
- Workforce capability - knowledge management, data and systems, learning and development, recruitment, census related activity, vicarious trauma management framework, enforcement coordination
- Uplift projects –corporate initiatives that strengthen operations and capability.
All APS6 roles are expected to exemplify team leadership and contribute to a professional, collaborative and supportive team culture by role modelling leadership behaviours, supporting staff development, promoting wellbeing and coaching others.
About you
All candidates are expected to meet the APS Integrated Leadership Profile (ILS) for the APS6 classification. Follow the link for more information on the ILS.
Senior Compliance Officers in the Standards Reform Team or the E-micromobility Devices Team are expected to meet the following criteria:
- A demonstrated understanding, or an ability to quickly acquire an understanding, of the ACCC’s product safety functions, role, purpose and objectives, and knowledge of the Australian Consumer Law.
- A demonstrated ability to:
- Undertake objective, systemic research, analyse complex issues and make recommendations to support decision making (ideally in matters involving product safety risks).
- Communicate clearly and persuasively to internal and external audiences. This includes preparing briefing materials, reports, correspondence and external facing materials such as consumer and industry guidance.
- Build positive working relationship and effectively engage and work with both internal and external stakeholders to deliver outcomes.
- Plan, organise and prioritise a demanding workload, ensuring quality work with timely delivery.
- Guide and develop staff where required.
The following job specific criteria are also highly desirable:
- Technical, policy or sector knowledge of product safety, consumer affairs and/or small business issues.
Senior Governance Officers in the Governance and Coordination Team are expected to meet the following criteria:
- A demonstrated understanding of, or ability to take steps to acquire knowledge of, the ACCC’s product safety functions, role, purpose and objectives, and knowledge of the Australian Consumer Law
- Work under limited direction, apply sound judgement and analytical thinking, and manage competing priorities in a fast-paced environment
- Deliver high-quality governance, secretariat, project and business support, including identifying and recommending improvements to processes and systems.
- Communicate clearly and confidently, both verbally and in writing, with a focus on key issues and practical outcomes.
- Demonstrate professionalism, discretion, attention to detail and a strong understanding of relevant policies, procedures and APS obligations.
- Confidently use office technologies and agency systems to support divisional operations, data quality and workflow management.
