CCV
The County Court (`the Court'), is Victoria's principal trial court. Its purpose is to hear and determine matters in a fair, timely, efficient and accessible way. The Court sits between the Supreme and Magistrates' Courts in Victoria's court hierarchy and operates independently from executive government.
The Court hears a diverse range of criminal and civil matters, including almost all criminal offending with 90 per cent of jury trials being held in the Court. The Court hears matters in Melbourne and in 12 regional locations across Victoria.
The Court has 74 permanent judges, up to 10 engaged reserve judges and seven judicial registrars supported by 335 staff. The Court's judicial officers and staff deal with 11,500 matters annually.
The Court is committed to the principles of Court Excellence as outlined in the International Framework for Court Excellence and is focused on improving timeliness, expanding early dispute resolution, modernising technology and strengthening organisational capability.
