We are seeking a Senior Financial Accountant to join Disaster Welfare & Business Continuity – Business Operations, providing expert financial accounting, project accounting and reporting support across a diverse portfolio of housing, infrastructure and business initiatives.
This is an excellent opportunity for an experienced finance professional to apply their technical expertise in project, capital and property accounting while contributing to programs that make a tangible difference to communities across the state.
Your role
As a Senior Financial Accountant, you will deliver accurate, compliant and insightful financial accounting and reporting across a complex and fast-paced environment. You will support project, capital and property accounting activities, including housing, construction and business improvement initiatives, while partnering with stakeholders across Homes NSW and shared service providers.
You will also provide guidance to team members and support the Finance Manager and Finance Director on key priorities and business continuity activities.
What you’ll do
Deliver accurate financial, project and cost reporting in line with accounting standards, Treasury requirements and internal controls.
Manage project cost accruals, WIP balances, reconciliations, cost allocations and month-end activities.
Review capital and project accounting transactions, including asset classification and capitalisation treatment.
Provide financial analysis and advice to support budgeting, decision-making and risk management.
Support stakeholders to resolve accounting, reporting, system and data-related issues.
Identify opportunities to improve financial processes, controls and reporting practices.
Provide guidance and support to team members and act as a delegate for management when required.
What we’re looking for
You are a proactive and technically capable finance professional who enjoys working in a collaborative environment. You bring:
Essential: CA or CPA qualification with a minimum of three years' post-qualification experience.
Experience in financial reporting, project, capital, property or construction accounting within a complex organisation.
Strong knowledge of Australian Accounting Standards, financial controls, governance requirements and capitalisation principles.
Experience managing cost accruals, WIP balances, reconciliations, cost allocations and reporting activities.
Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to identify risks and provide practical financial insights.
Advanced Excel skills, including modelling and Power Query, and experience using ERP and project costing systems.
Strong stakeholder engagement and communication skills, with the ability to explain financial information to diverse audiences.
Demonstrated initiative, sound judgement and the ability to guide team members and support leadership continuity.

A capital construction project shows the following issues, (i) $5 million total cost to date; (ii) some labour costs have been expensed instead of capitalised; (iii) Work in Progress (WIP) balances are older than 12 months; (iv) project costs are 15% over budget; and (v) some property assets have been capitalised to the incorrect asset class.
Please outline: (i) the key accounting, reporting, and governance risks you would identify; (ii) how you would review the capitalisation treatment and aged WIP balances; (iii) what financial analysis or management reporting you would provide; and (iv) what rectification actions you would take for assets capitalised to the incorrect asset class.
Please keep your response to 1 page and relevant to the Senior Financial Accountant Clerk 9/10 role.
