SCOPE OF POSITION
ConeTec Pty Ltd is looking to hire a Field Engineer / Geologist. The ideal fit will be responsible for the safe, efficient, and accurate operation of geotechnical site investigation equipment, including but not limited to CPT, VST, DMT, and varying geophysics equipment. The Field Engineer / Geologist is tasked with the smooth and accurate execution of various projects, from the deployment of equipment to data acquisition and submission. The candidate will gain exposure to various mining, infrastructure, and port working environments, operating heavy machinery and a sophisticated suite of geotechnical instruments. The Field Engineer/Geologist will assist in project planning, preparation, and client interactions. A successful candidate must have well-developed interpersonal, organizational and communication skills as well as strong problem-solving abilities.
The ideal candidate will be based near our Brisbane, Sydney or Perth locations, however remote workers will still be considered and will be compensated for travel. Work areas include all states in Australia as well as Tasmania, PNG, and other Oceania regions as required.
OVERALL GOALS FOR POSITION
- Develop a strong working knowledge of site investigation practices and procedures.
- Build comprehension of soil mechanics, and in-situ testing field investigations.
Expand skill set through training and certifications to contribute meaningfully to a larger team to assist various engineering consultants by delivering high quality, reliable data.

ROLES, RESPONSIBILITIES & EXPECTATIONS
Equipment Operation
- Familiarize with and operate the following equipment:
- Cone Penetration Testing (CPT)
- Vane Shear Testing (VST)
- Sampling systems (disturbed and undisturbed sampling)
- Dilatometer (DMT), and other in-situ testing equipment in a safe and productive manner.
- Provide timely assistance to both Operators and Engineers as required.
- Assist with the mobilisation and demobilisation of equipment in hard-to-access environments.
- Perform routine maintenance on various pieces of equipment to ensure optimal performance.
Data Collection & Reporting
- Perform testing to collect data in a timely, orderly, and accurate manner.
- Compile the collected data, sample logs, etc. daily and submit to the Engineer/Supervisor and/or client for further processing.
- Collect field notes and photos to guarantee the translation of data from the field to the office is as highly accurate as possible.
- Support the data management team for any questions or queries regarding collected data to report findings most accurately.
Health & Safety
- Embrace with and respect ConeTec’s safety culture, first and foremost
- Ensure proper preparation and knowledge of all necessary safe operating procedures before beginning any job.
- Report any safety-related incidents, infractions, or near misses to the Project Manager and the HSE Officer, immediately.
Other General Responsibilities
- Communicate with the Supervisor or Project Manager as to any equipment problems or needs, as well as any field observations that might be of use.
Support additional shop functions as needed.

SKILLS, QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE REQUIRED
Education Requirements
- Must be enrolled in Engineering/Geology program at an accredited post-secondary institution or have completed an Engineering/Geology degree or diploma program.
- Technologist diplomas in relevant fields will also be considered.
Experience Requirements
- Previous field experience is an asset.
- Mid-heavy equipment operation equipment is an asset
- Proficient with basic computer skills and programs like Outlook, Excel, Word
- Valid Driver’s License
- Clean driver’s license report
- Whitecard, First Aid, or other relevant certification is an asset – ConeTec will provide necessary course enrolment/payment.
Technical Skill Requirements
- Basic electrical, mechanical, and hydraulic skills are an asset but not required.
- Must be able to perform physically demanding tasks, including lifting, moving heavy materials up to 50 lbs., climbing, crawling as well as walking on uneven ground, and working long hours in all weather conditions.
Soft Skill Requirements
- Must possess a strong work ethic and represent the company in a professional manner.
- Must be able to establish and maintain effective working relationships.
- Must be responsible and work well independently or in a team setting with minimal supervision.
- Must enjoy working outdoors and travelling for extended periods of time.
Must enjoy performing a wide variety of duties and be able to manage multiple tasks and priorities
