About the Business and the Role
BIRS – Building Improvement & Restoration Services is an established Sydney-based remedial building company specialising in high-quality construction, remedial and restoration works across residential, commercial and strata properties.
Due to continued growth, we are seeking an experienced Tiler to join our team on a full-time basis.
The successful applicant will work across a variety of remedial building projects throughout Sydney, including balconies, terraces, bathrooms, wet areas and other internal and external tiled areas.
We are looking for someone who takes pride in their workmanship, has excellent attention to detail and can consistently deliver a high-quality professional finish.
Job Tasks and Responsibilities
- Examining plans, drawings, specifications and scopes of work to determine wall and floor tiling requirements, layouts, finishes and installation methods.
- Measuring and marking wall and floor surfaces and setting out tiling work to establish tile positioning, levels, alignment, spacing, patterns and finished dimensions.
- Calculating and confirming quantities of tiles, adhesives, grout and other materials required for assigned tiling works.
- Preparing wall and floor surfaces by removing existing tiles and materials, cleaning substrates, filling cracks and holes, and levelling and smoothing surfaces prior to tiling.
- Preparing floor substrates by screeding and levelling surfaces and establishing appropriate falls towards floor wastes and drainage points, particularly in bathrooms, balconies, terraces and other wet areas.
- Inspecting substrates for cracks, uneven surfaces, moisture, water ingress, defective screeds or waterproofing and undertaking or coordinating appropriate preparation before tiling.
- Applying and working with appropriate waterproofing systems in wet areas and ensuring completed waterproofing membranes are not damaged during subsequent tiling works.
- Selecting, preparing and applying appropriate adhesives, mortars and other fixing materials to wall and floor surfaces.
- Laying, positioning and fixing ceramic, porcelain, stone, marble, mosaic and other tiles to internal and external walls and floors, ensuring correct alignment, levels, spacing, joint widths and finished appearance.
- Measuring, cutting, drilling and shaping tiles using manual and powered cutting equipment to fit around corners, edges, doorways, fittings, pipes, floor wastes and other fixtures or obstructions.
- Checking tiles during installation and making necessary adjustments to ensure tiled surfaces are level, correctly aligned and evenly spaced.
- Applying grout to completed wall and floor tiling, cleaning excess grout and applying appropriate sealants and finishing materials to joints, corners and junctions where required.
- Cleaning, polishing and finishing tiled surfaces to achieve the required professional appearance and installing decorative, mosaic or feature tiling where specified.
- Inspecting existing wall and floor tiling, removing cracked, loose or damaged tiles and carrying out repairs and replacement tiling associated with bathrooms, balconies, terraces, wet areas, water ingress and other remedial building works.
- Working with waterproofers, builders, supervisors and other trades to ensure substrate preparation, waterproofing and tiling works are completed in the correct construction sequence.
- Inspecting completed wall and floor tiling and rectifying defects such as uneven or damaged tiles, incorrect alignment or joint spacing, and incomplete grouting.
- Ensuring all tiling work complies with project specifications, applicable Australian Standards, manufacturer installation requirements, WHS requirements and BIRS quality standards.
- Correctly using and maintaining tile cutters, grinders, levelling equipment and other tiling tools and maintaining
Skills Required
- Strong wall and floor tiling skills. Excellent attention to detail. Strong knowledge of surface preparation and screeding. Experience working with waterproofed areas. Ability to achieve correct falls and finishes, particularly on balconies and wet areas. Good problem-solving skills. Ability to work independently and as part of a team. Reliable, punctual and professional. Good communication skills. Strong commitment to workplace safety.
Experience & Requirements
- Cert IV in Building & Constructions and 1 year of relevant full time work experience’’ Experience in remedial building and restoration works highly regarded. Current White Card. Current Australian driver’s licence preferred. Own basic tools preferred. Must have the legal right to work in Australia.
