Psychologist – Part-Time | General Practice
Location: Casula / South-West Sydney
Position: Part-Time Psychologist
Setting: Established General Practice / Medical Centre
Hours: Flexible
About Our Practice
We are a busy, friendly and community-focused General Practice providing comprehensive healthcare to families in South-West Sydney.
Our practice serves a highly diverse multicultural community, including a large number of patients from non-English-speaking backgrounds (NESB) and a significant Arabic-speaking community.
We are looking for an experienced and compassionate Psychologist to join our multidisciplinary team on a part-time basis.
This position would particularly suit a psychologist who enjoys working collaboratively with GPs and other healthcare professionals and values providing accessible mental healthcare to patients who may otherwise have difficulty accessing psychological services.
About the Role
The successful psychologist will work from within our medical centre, receiving referrals from our GPs and working collaboratively with the broader practice team.
The role will involve assessment and psychological therapy for a diverse range of patients, including adults, families and, depending on the psychologist's experience and interests, adolescents and children.
We are particularly interested in a psychologist who is comfortable working with patients from culturally and linguistically diverse (CALD) and non-English-speaking backgrounds.
Arabic-speaking applicants would be highly regarded, although Arabic language skills are not essential.
Key Responsibilities
The role may include:
- Providing psychological assessment and evidence-based therapy
- Managing patients referred under GP Mental Health Treatment Plans
- Working with patients experiencing anxiety, depression, adjustment difficulties, grief, trauma, family difficulties and other common mental health presentations
- Providing culturally sensitive psychological care to NESB and CALD patients
- Communicating and collaborating with referring GPs regarding patient management
- Working as part of the broader medical centre team
- Maintaining appropriate clinical documentation and correspondence
- Developing appropriate treatment plans and monitoring patient progress
- Liaising with other health professionals when clinically appropriate
- Contributing to continuity of care for patients with complex medical, psychological and social needs
Bulk Billing and Accessible Care
Accessibility of mental healthcare is important to our practice and our community.
We are therefore looking for a psychologist who is willing to bulk bill pensioners and other agreed patient groups where appropriate.
Billing arrangements for other patients can be discussed and structured to suit the psychologist and the practice.
Who We Are Looking For
We are seeking someone who:
- Holds current registration with AHPRA as a psychologist
- Is eligible to provide Medicare-rebatable psychological services
- Has experience working in a General Practice, medical centre or multidisciplinary healthcare environment
- Enjoys working collaboratively with GPs and other healthcare professionals
- Has experience working with culturally and linguistically diverse communities
- Is comfortable seeing patients from non-English-speaking backgrounds
- Is compassionate, approachable and culturally sensitive
- Is reliable and able to work independently while remaining part of the broader practice team
- Is willing to bulk bill pensioners
- Is interested in establishing long-term relationships with referring doctors and patients
Arabic language skills are highly desirable but not essential.
Experience working with the Arabic-speaking or broader Middle Eastern community would also be highly regarded.
Why Join Our Practice?
This is an opportunity to establish yourself within an existing medical centre rather than working in isolation.
Our GPs see a broad range of patients with significant demand for accessible psychological services, providing the opportunity to develop a consistent referral base.
We offer:
- Part-time and flexible working arrangements
- An established GP referral base
- Flexible consulting sessions
- A supportive multidisciplinary environment
- Administrative and reception support
- The opportunity to work closely with referring GPs
- A culturally diverse patient population
- Strong demand for psychological services
- The opportunity to provide meaningful care to patients who may have difficulty accessing mental health services elsewhere
- A friendly and team-oriented workplace
- Potential to increase consulting sessions over time if desired
Practice Culture
We believe mental healthcare works best when psychologists and GPs can communicate and work together.
Rather than simply providing consulting rooms, we are looking for a psychologist who would like to become part of the medical centre team, develop relationships with our doctors and staff, and contribute to coordinated patient care.
We particularly value clinicians who understand the challenges faced by migrant families and patients from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds.
If you are an experienced psychologist looking for a flexible part-time position within a supportive medical centre and would like to work with a diverse and welcoming community, we would be pleased to hear from you.
