About the Opportunity
The Needle and Syringe Program (NSP) is an evidence-based public health program that aims to reduce the transmission of blood borne viruses, such as HIV and hepatitis C, among people who inject drugs. It seeks to minimise risk behaviours that have the potential to transmit these infections. It is based on the Principles of Harm Minimisation.
The NSP Health Education Officer is responsible for the delivery of specialist services to people who inject drugs, and to associated networks and services within the Central Coast community. These services are delivered via Primary and Secondary Needle and Syringe Program outlets, Automated Vending Machines, and Outreach Services.
In this role you will:

Deliver health promotion messages, education, brief intervention and/or assessment and supported referral to appropriate services for people who inject drugs who access the NSP.

Participate in actions to support the supply, storage and distribution of safe injecting equipment and safe sex resources.

Accurately collect healthcare information and maintain thorough documentation in patient records.

Communicate effectively with patients, families, and the healthcare team to promote a supportive environment.
The Health Education Officer will work at any of the Primary Outlets, attend to any of the Secondary Sites, Automated Vending Machines and community disposal bins and ad-hoc sites as relevant in the Central Coast Local Health District.

About You
We are looking for someone who has:

Tertiary qualifications or working towards tertiary qualifications in Behavioural/Social Sciences, Drug and Alcohol, Health, Education or related areas, or relevant work experience in related fields.

Demonstrated understanding and knowledge of HIV, hepatitis C and other blood borne viruses and the principles of harm minimisation.

Comprehensive understanding of issues affecting individuals who inject drugs inclusive of social, legal and ethical factors and the demonstrated ability to relate to people who inject drugs in a non-judgemental manner and sensitivity to lifestyle and behavioural choices.

Demonstrated time management and organisational skills and the ability to prioritise work tasks.

Demonstrated competency in computer, written and verbal communication skills, with current NSW drivers licence and the ability to work in various locations across the Central Coast.
