Responsible for the provision of independent, objective and risk-based internal audit, assurance and advisory services, we also provide independent support to the Inspector-General of Biosecurity and Inspector-General of Animal Welfare and Live Animal Exports.
As a Senior Data Analyst, you will help safeguard the department and its personnel from harm by proactively identifying and preventing integrity and security threats using data and intelligence.
The Senior Data Analyst designs and delivers data and analytics solutions to identify, assess and monitor integrity and security risks. Using data wrangling, exploratory data analysis and intelligence approaches, the role produces high-quality insights that support the delivery of the department’s protective security and integrity frameworks. The role values a thoughtful, curious approach to analysis, seeking to understand the story behind the data while exercising sound judgement in how insights are developed and used.
The role offers opportunities to specialise in one or both of the following streams:
-
Data engineering, focusing on dimensional modelling and data transformation using SQL and Power BI to integrate disparate datasets and unlock new insights.
-
Intelligence analysis, focussing on statistical analysis, trend analysis and risk identification to support integrity, security and compliance outcomes.
Across both streams, the role contributes to identifying and mitigating risks to the department, its operations and its people. Success in the role requires strong stakeholder engagement, sound judgement and the ability to operate confidently in a policy and regulatory environment. The ideal candidate demonstrates strong technical capability, brings a sense of curiosity and a desire to ask the right questions, is self-driven and collaborative, and is motivated to deliver high-quality data and analytics products that have real-world impact.
This is where you play an important role.
As the Senior Data Analyst, you will:
- Coordinate and deliver complex data and analytics initiatives with minimal supervision.
-
Apply intelligence and analytical techniques to identify trends, risks and emerging issues.
-
Provide clear, evidence-based advice on integrity and security matters, including through effective data visualisation and report writing.
-
Build and apply a deep understanding of the department’s operational business and policy environment to support the development of well-contextualised data and analytics products.
-
Engage with operational and policy stakeholders to clarify requirements, test assumptions and build shared understanding of data context and limitations.
-
Follow established quality assurance processes, documentation and coding standards.
-
Contribute to team capability through peer learning, mentoring and constructive code and analysis reviews.
-
Ensure compliance with relevant legislation, policies and standards, including the APS Values and Code of Conduct and departmental health and safety requirements.
Please note that the merit pool established through this selection process, which is valid for a period of eighteen months from the date the vacancy was advertised in the Public Service Gazette, may also be used to fill future ongoing vacancies in the branch where the duties are of a similar nature.
Our ideal candidate will have:
Knowledge and experience
- Experience applying intelligence or risk-based analytical approaches in a security, integrity, compliance or regulatory context.
-
Demonstrated experience supporting organisational outcomes using data wrangling, analysis and visualisation.
-
Data wrangling in Power BI, SQL, Python or R, or willingness to learn.
-
Demonstrated experience reviewing other people’s analysis work or code and enforcing quality patterns.
